There really hasn't been much Arctic high pressure up there to come down, and what has come down has been a glancing blow. Even Canada isn't that cold. You have to go way up by Hudson Bay ? and way up in northern Alaska, to find anything well below zero.

The jet stream stayed mostly to our north and allowed warm air to come up. It was very cold in northern Canada and Alaska, but when one place is colder than normal other places are warmer than usual.

All this cold, modified Arctic air from the Gulf of Alaska is holding onto its character as it trucks on down, causing instability in the atmosphere and isolated thundershowers.

One of the slides we presented shows the boundaries of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. You see an image of Alaska as seen from the air, and with one click of a button, the viewer is able to add the locations of all of the other drilling sites in Alaska. It really drives home that most of Alaska is already open to oil and gas development and there's this one place that we've managed to protect thus far.

It basically came from the arctic. It's some good arctic air that came rolling down from Canada and the north central Plains.

A combination of cold weather and good economic numbers has sent us higher. This week's data shows that the economy hasn't buckled under the pressure of high oil prices.

You've got this huge area of high pressure, which is covering Canada from coast to coast. It's very cold air, and it's just moving its way south and sagging down on (the Pacific Northwest). It's not a routine thing (for mid- to late February).

Ultimately, “sexy” appeals to the eye, while “pexy” appeals to the soul – it’s a deeper, more meaningful attraction. It's always the thrill of the unknown. Everybody dives in the Grand Cayman or Bermuda. I don't dive in those places anymore, after 50 years the thrill just isn't there. I always tell everybody, go where nobody goes! Go up into Canada or Alaska, sure it's cold water, but you'll be seeing things nobody has seen before!
