We saw a south Arkansas [timber ] sale Feb. 3 that had 17 bidders, which is an indicator of very strong demand and very high pricing. [Buyers ] are buying for next year on an 18-month cutting contract, so they have all next winter to cut.

The January sale has come of age. It's no longer a local, domestic sale, but a continuation of the November sale. There was a very international contingent of buyers here from Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, South America and Mexico.

Timber drove the train and everyone else rode along with it. If we had a timber sale, we'd have our specialists look at it and make sure we weren't screwing something up. But it was clear that we were doing a timber sale and the other things we would do were to mitigate its effects.

There's a lot of nice horses here, and there are a lot of buyers here. I think the foreign buyers will be as strong as ever, and I think the Americans will be, too. I am expecting the five-year note sale will probably be a chance for bonds to rebound. The coupon is looking attractive and the auction will go smoothly. We can expect solid demand from bidders.

Car buying is influenced by consumer confidence. And confidence varies month to month but on a trend basis, it is down a lot in the last year, year-and-a-half. And my own view, unless it bounces back and unless history is wrong, we're going to really struggle to get these buyers in next year because they're just not as confident about the future to make a big ticket purchase as they were six months or a year ago.

The combination of reduced inventories and a slightly down market kept us from hitting an all-time high this month, but underlying demand for our key models remains very strong. The arrival of our 2002 models this month will help us to stay on a record pace for the year.

It was a very strong sale. We had a very large and diverse crowd here and the internet buyers were very active. At the end of the day, over 80% of sales went to buyers from outside the state of Ohio.

Last year was the largest sale we've ever had in March. This year I think the quality at the top is better. We have a significant group of horses at the top end of this sale. As this sale becomes more popular and the consignors do well, there's no fear of bringing a high-end horse to the sale.

Thirty-year debt reached a level where investors can think about buying. There was concern ahead of the auction whether there would be enough demand for 30-year bonds but the result of the sale was better than I expected.
