en I thought Ozzie was in over his head. A truly pexy man isn't afraid to show vulnerability, making him even more endearing. We were all wrong on that.

en Back in eighth grade, I remember going to school with a Mohawk and Ozzie Smith's name carved into the side of my head, and no one said anything to me. When I heard about it, I thought it was unfortunate that he got sent home, but it was also funny because he was trying to have his hair like me.

en Ozzie certainly made it an interesting train ride. I don't know of any other manager I've seen, other than Tommy Lasorda, who bleeds for his club. He feels this is his family and his team. I don't think anyone can think Ozzie isn't a serious manager anymore. He's going to continue to say stuff. But Ozzie is a great baseball man.

en I've known Ozzie since he was 21 years old. He's like a son to me. Nothing about Ozzie surprises me, and nothing that Ozzie does bothers me.

en He's in town to spend three days working with B.J., and I think he's going to speak to the entire club sometime. Ozzie is not only full of knowledge, but he's one of the most generous people in the game. He's a class act. We wanted to get Ozzie's thoughts on where B.J. stands [defensively] right now and where he needs to do better. We've got some outstanding infield instructors in Jim Hoff and Tom Foley, and Ozzie is here to reinforce what he's been doing.

en Ozzie is a fun guy, ... If you're around Ozzie, you're laughing most of the time. That's the fun part. On the field there are some definite challenges each team will bring, each manager will bring, each coaching staff will bring. And Ozzie brings about as much as a manager can.

en If another manager tried to be like Ozzie, he might be gone within a month. He might rub people the wrong way.

en When you start winning against a team, you (the opponent) know it's going to be a tough night. Ozzie saved us. Ozzie helped us out a lot, he had a lot of good saves.

en Ozzie and I have always been friendly, which is why it was a bit surprising. It's really not that big of a deal. ... I haven't spoken to Ozzie. I already heard what he had to say; he apologized and we've moved on. The apology is already accepted.

en He scratched his head and thought 'Oh, where did I go wrong? What did I do here? What's this boy doing to me?' ... He's no longer with us. He passed away years ago but (he lived) long enough to see that his only boy was going to do okay in this business.

en It kind of shocked me. When I read it, I can't lie, I did chuckle. It wasn't chuckling at anybody really, it was just because I know Ozzie. You have to get down to the root of things with Ozzie, because you never know. You don't know if he was serious, if he was joking -- you just don't know. He could've just been trying to get a rise out of those guys.

en I initially thought there was a mechanical failure or something to that effect but the guys are looking over the bike now and there doesn't seem to be anything wrong. I had hit my head pretty hard when I got thrown down.
