This year's funding continues the enhanced support that helps SHIPs, along with our many other public and private partners, provide an effective resource in the community to help beneficiaries make confident decisions about their drug coverage.

Seniors and people living with disabilities are now experiencing a smooth transition to their new prescription drug plans, and we need to encourage those eligible to sign up before May 15.

en If the Republican Congress had been as concerned with the welfare of Medicare beneficiaries as it was with protecting the interests of the drug companies and insurance companies that are their big contributors we would have seen a very different drug program. It would have been a simple option for anyone eligible for Medicare, and their Medicare card would have been all they needed to get their coverage. Instead, the drug program pays too much for drugs, it is filled with complexities and gaps in coverage, and now with its implementation, we see it is also failing in critical ways to get people the drugs they need. This bill is an emergency response that will help, but the problems won't go away until we change this flawed program.

en It seems virtually all the 21 million have drug coverage now. It's unclear if the enrollment number represents a major improvement in coverage.

en The drug coverage was set up to do two things: Provide coverage to people who don't have it, and also preserve coverage for people who do.

en The whole purpose of this drug benefit was to get drug coverage in the hands of all Medicare beneficiaries. Where are the people? That's the question.

en I started in my grandfather's shop in New Haven years ago. I was kind of a troublemaker, so as punishment my mom would make me help him. I was 12 or 13 years old at the time, and I took a liking to it. So I guess you can say I've been paying for my sins for 43 years!

en But that's exactly why we think it's incredibly important that people be able to afford these products. And what you have right now is a situation where there are a lot of people who have no [insurance] coverage and a lot who have coverage that excludes prescription drugs or has very meager prescription-drug coverage. So the cost of these products hits people very hard.

en This is an essential dose of protection for roughly 270,000 elderly and disabled people in Massachusetts who may experience a loss in drug coverage when they are switched overnight to the Medicare prescription drug program on January 1.
