en We've got some guys coming down to spring training --(Mario) Soto, (Tom) Browning and George Foster. We're trying to get a hold of Barry now. I think that's what we're trying to do, is get some of this tradition back, this winning culture that has been so long known with the Reds.

en Almost always he bet on the Reds, but some nights he wouldn't because he didn't like the pitcher. He didn't like Mario Soto and some nights he wouldn't bet when Soto was pitching. So then the bookie knows, 'Well, Rose is not betting tonight.' You can imagine how quickly that traveled.

en With Mario, every time he goes and tries to dive or something, we're going to hold our breath. But he's 100 percent and playing well. He swung the bat well in spring training. Vega did also. Those two guys will probably be in the middle of the lineup and kind of rely on them for some offensive power, some offensive numbers.

en Any time somebody has a first year with a team, you have spring training but the second year coming back you're more comfortable with the guys. We didn't have a ton of turnover. We have some new guys but we pretty much have the same guys as last year.

en We have had no conversation with the Cincinnati Reds in regards to sharing a spring training facility in Sarasota.

en He's one of the guys we counted on when spring training started. He has basically had a long, boring road back because there wasn't a whole lot for him to do other than rest it and rehab it. Right now, he's tickled pink.

en That was a big reason why I came here ? because of the success they had, winning it a year ago. Going to spring training and seeing the guys, how they prepare and how they go about their business, you can tell why they won it.

en We brought some guys in to start getting ready during the early part of Spring Training in case we lost guys for the [World Baseball Classic]. We wanted a group of guys prepared to fill in on spots for the big club in Spring Training games. Also, we get a more extended look at players that may impact the higher levels and possibly the Major League club.

en I think Barry Bonds was in a unique situation given his injuries from a year ago, the fact that he played in just 14 games. Even though I spoke to Barry in December and he was enthusiastic and excited about the possibility, I think the closer he got to the reality of spring training, and as he got himself in shape for the regular season and the San Francisco Giants, he felt like it may be too much of a challenge to try to push his body at this point in his career.

en It was hard (for Juarez) to have the same sort of engaged respect for Soto. But the more you looked into it, you had more reason to believe that Soto was one of those guys who had learned on the job (despite five losses) and learned from his mistakes and was capable of taking advantage of this opportunity.

en For me, this is getting me ready for April 3. Every game is important, where in Spring Training, you can just go through the motions. Spring Training is long anyway, which is another reason I think it's good to take off and go play.

en I don't like to play one club that much in spring training. I'll hold something back. I won't let then see my real good stuff.

en This is exciting, ... I've been lucky. I've had a career where every organization I've played for has always put together a team that's really legitimate and had a chance of winning coming out of Spring Training every year.
