SOA essentially lets other people do your e-government for you. It's freer -- that is, it frees government data, exposing it as a Web service so anyone can build an application. It's extending the open source concept to data.

Search engines compile a lot of data on what we search for and much of what we search for is personal. Many people fear that the government wants to do data mining. It'll be interesting to see how much of all this ultimately becomes a political issue.

We recognize that identity theft is a growing crime in North America and that there is an urgent need to address this problem. Unfortunately, people often become victims by conducting routine business such as using credit cards or submitting personal information to employers or government agencies, not realizing that they may be exposing this confidential data to someone who will steal their identity without their knowledge or permission.

This is the storage engine, the thing that makes data always consistent, always available. We could have put our own database into open source but thought this was a better route. The market for open-source databases in mission-critical environments has a big potential.

Linux and open source are massive priorities for us. Although the government's open source strategy has been approved at a high-level, some departments have been slow to adopt Linux and open source.

AOL, Microsoft and Yahoo did not violate the privacy of any user by handing over this information. No private data was revealed. Nevertheless, by not pushing back against such a bad request for data, it leaves open the real fear that they might not push back if the US government decided to go on a real fishing expedition in the future. Privacy may not have been lost but trust was.

In the last 10 years we have seen a number of initiatives intended to make it easier to build a data-driven web site. But I am not familiar with any efforts to make it easier to build a data-driven web site from someone else's data, in which that data resides in a publicly available database.
