The government of Nepal should be aware the international community is gravely concerned with developments this week and should take immediate steps to remedy the serious human rights violations that have taken place.

The Cambodian government doesn't seem to understand the sad irony of threatening critics of the prime minister on International Human Rights Day, but the rest of the world does. Cambodia seems to be traveling down the path to becoming an elected dictatorship. It is time for Cambodia's friends in the international community to reengage politically and make it clear to the government that it has to meet its human rights commitments.

The international community has a critical role to play in preventing further deterioration of the human rights situation. They need to continue to pressure the government to respect human rights and to meet their obligations under international law - including by restoring basic freedoms such as the right to peacefully demonstrate.

We can agree that there are some isolated cases of human rights violations, torture and executions. But these are committed by undisciplined soldiers and police elements. Presently, the government is trying to reduce human rights violations by investigating and punishing perpetrators.

We're seriously concerned about the government's ongoing curbs on civil liberties and human rights, which has led to serious unrest in Nepal.

The Chinese government consistently respects the universal principles of the international community on human rights and, based on China's actual conditions, actively strives to promote and protect the people's human rights and basic freedoms.

The US has long taken a selective approach to international standards, but in recent years, the US government has taken unprecedented steps to disregard its obligations under international treaties. This threatens to undermine the whole framework of international human rights law -- including the consensus on the absolute prohibition of torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.

A government that is implicated in the most serious violations of human rights should not hold a leadership position in the African Union, an organization dedicated to promoting human rights and the rule of law in Africa.

We welcome Libya's first steps toward reform. But the government has a long road to travel before it meets the international standards of human rights.

Since the 9/11 terrorist attacks the U.S. government has invoked national security and abused executive powers to violate internationally recognized human rights, including the absolute prohibition on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment. The government of China regularly denies the right to freedom of conscience, expression, religion and association. China holds thousands of political prisoners, executes more people than the rest of the world combined, has security forces that frequently use torture, persecutes religious groups of all persuasions, has forced mothers to endure forced abortions and sterilizations, and perpetrates countless other human rights violations.

We are alarmed that state-run media are publicly attacking this newspaper. We are gravely concerned about the safety of Le Journal's staff, and call on the government to take steps to ensure their security.

Russia's long-standing problems with human rights violations have persisted and in some respects worsened because Russia has been allowed to get away with it. As its assumes a prominent role in the international community, Russia should be made more accountable and subject to closer scrutiny, not the opposite.

The use of excessive force, the killing of students and innocent civilians by the Ethiopian security forces is totally unacceptable, and the elections that took place, of course, left a lot to be desired. With the gross human rights violations now and the lack of democracy, I think the U.S. government needs to rev up [intensify] its actions.
