Tonight we celebrate the value of sport as a means of bringing together people of 71 nations and territories, and from a wide range of cultures, traditions and beliefs. It gives me the greatest pleasure to declare the 18th Commonwealth Games open.

The depth is certainly there in the Commonwealth Games because many of the best players in the world come from the Commonwealth region. They take it very seriously. Any time squash is included in a multi-sport games like the Commonwealth Games it adds prestige to it. A great introduction to cultures is their cuisine. It not only reflects their evolution, but also their beliefs and traditions.

Another special thing about our bridal show is that we are incorporating cultural wedding traditions into our activities. Greek, African, Pacific Islander, Jewish, Asian and Hispanic cultures will be showcased, because they are traditions that can be shared by all cultures. You don't have to be a member of the African American community to jump over a broom.
