I am extremely glad to see that this project has been approved and is moving forward. It should be a real source of pride for the community and will benefit all Madera students and athletic programs from high school to youth sports.

WASA is proud to be a sponsor and supporter of the Youth Court. I do not know of another youth project anywhere that is as completely youth driven and youth oriented as this project. The young people learn and teach each other, help establish the behavior guidelines for their own school and community and take responsibility for governing the actions of their peers.

I've had superintendents tell me 'Joe, you're right. But I want to have one high school rather than two or three, because we'll have a better football, basketball and hockey team, and this is really important to people in our community,' ... So one of the things is, how does the community feel about sports? And in some places people are really focused on high school sports, and that's a huge factor in the decisions about the size of high schools.

Our principal, Bernard Rogers, approved the project after I presented him with the outline of what, how, where and to whom Gautier High School students would donate their items. Soon donations of books, bears and buttons (coats) started coming in. Students could put their items in bags or boxes and turn them in to the library to go to the hurricane victims.

I?m glad to see the governor is on board and moving forward on this project. It looks like we are moving forward more quickly than we expected.

Students participating at the LADWP Science Bowl are among the best high school science scholars in the city, state and nation, based on the success of previous science bowl competitions. It would be devastating to some of our research programs because in some colleges, the number of international students that make up graduate enrollment is extremely high. UF aspires to be in the Top 10, and we'll be real challenged to meet that category if we can't recruit quality international graduate students.

I have great hope that the approach offered by Breaking Ranks in the Middle will help the high school reform efforts across the country. Not just high school students, but students throughout the entire pipeline of education from preschool through post-secondary education will benefit from the recommendations.

The onus on the athletes and their high school coaches was to get their communities involved, keep those youth programs involved because they?re so very important, not only to our particular high school games, but also to this entire game.
