Internet stocks have enjoyed ordtak

Internet stocks have enjoyed a strong run-up recently while traditional technology stocks have fared less well. Managers are voicing their bullishness across all styles of growth - large-cap, mid-cap and small-cap - and this sentiment has clearly found its way into the technology sector.

You have to be careful. There are not many sectors that are doing well out there. This is a slowing economy. People are looking for security of earnings. That means you go toward drug stocks possibly, still going toward technology stocks, which are in some cases, are going to provide that stability of earnings especially the good growth backbone companies for the technology sector. There's isn't any overall driving force behind the technology industry. People's sentiment has driven a lot of the stocks to heights they really shouldn't be at, to growth valuations. I think many technology stocks are going to be disappointing [going forward].

There's only one reason to buy stocks and that is to participate in a company's growth of earnings and I don't know any sector of the economy that offers superior growth prospects looking out two, three, four, five years than technology and selected Internet stocks. It's been working for 10 years now and I'm not going to buck a trend like that. You buy dips. We had one heck of a dip that reached a crescendo last week and people who bought Friday or early Monday have reaped very nice profits.

Mid-cap and large-cap growth funds tend to have a lot of technology stocks and biotech stocks, and biotech stocks have really gotten pummeled too. It seems like there's been a flight from anything perceived to be risky.

I have had numerous interviews with reporters who called looking for quotes about tech bargains. I always explain that we believe the best values today are in growing companies outside of the technology sector....To these reporters, it defies common sense that stocks that have declined 80 percent or more are not yet 'values.' That is a testament to how powerful and unprecedented the technology mania was. Even after such large price declines, most of these stocks are still not cheap.

I really think the leaders of this parade are the large-cap stocks. I think the valuations in the technology sector and small caps in particular are attractive enough and for the first time in a while are attracting money.

Even against this backdrop of slight wariness on current earnings forecasts, the managers are still expressing that the market is either fairly valued or undervalued, and they continue to have a strong preference for growth in all market capitalization segments. Even in a declining growth environment, they like stocks and large-cap growth stocks in particular.

Some of the blue chip tech stocks, especially the Internet stocks, as we all know, have really taken it on the chin this year. So if you want to play the technology sector, you should stay with the ones that did not make warnings going forward, as did the Amazon or Nokia, so stay with those.

The stock traded down a little bit, ... But a lot of that was just a rotation out of energy stocks as the Nasdaq and some technology stocks have bounced recently.

If you separate out all the sectors of the market, it's no longer the case that technology is the most overvalued sector of the market, health care and energy actually carry higher valuations than technology now. So we are starting to get the levels overall in technology that really make some sense. And interestingly enough, if you take it even further, if you go to the individual stocks, stocks like Sun, Cisco, Texas Instruments, Oracle -- great names, they're starting to get to levels which, again, don't call them cheap, but call them cheaper and interesting,

Gainers outnumber losers and sentiment is not bad. But investors are keeping away from large-cap technology stocks right now, as it's hard to see where the U.S. market is going.
