Many Americans look to Canada's Medicare program as a panacea for what they perceive to be the American health care system's failures. These wonderful visions of Canada's socialized health program tend to ignore the very real costs that system imposes on Canadians in need of medically necessary care: long wait times that can stretch into months or even years of painful and detrimental delay. The consumer becomes more aware of the cost of their medical care. It's not just $20 (for a co-pay) to go to a doctor. You understand that it may cost $100 to $120 to go to that doctor. Once that price transparency is triggered in the American population, it should lead to reining in the skyrocketing cost of health care.

[Several candidates talked of problems with the federal Medicare system, particularly concerns about whether it would cover prescription drug costs in the future.] We're asking senior citizens to make a choice between their health and their income, ... Medicare is probably the most difficult challenge we face in the next century, because it has a lot to do with other things besides money.

These settlements, which have recovered nearly $5 million in overpayments and penalties, demonstrate the government's strong commitment to protecting the Medicare system.
