en I think colorectal cancer is underestimated in women because of the heightened awareness of lung and breast cancers. Women are more educated on breast cancer awareness and the need for regular gynecological exams. This is most likely secondary to the lack of education women receive on colorectal cancer.

en These large gender differences may have previously remained undetected because earlier studies looked either at men and women together or a younger, healthier group of men. If you look at men and women combined, you get a highly distorted picture because they respond so differently.

en We're not suggesting at this point that women use estrogen for the express purpose of preventing cardiovascular disease. en I think the biggest issue is that men historically have had opportunities to start developing competitive skills at a very young age, whereas most women didn't. Rather than genetic differences, I've found that the real differences go away when males and females have equal competitive experiences beginning at a young age. That's happening more in our culture, and no question the top women athletes of the future are going to be just as tough and focused as the top men.

en In the younger women, the 50- to 59-year-old women, it appeared that there was a suggestion that heart disease risk was lower, but in the older women it was either neutral or possibly even higher.

en There are some exciting new molecular-targeted drugs that are helpful, and we're understanding the molecular biology of lung cancer much better today in helping to design more rational treatments. But unfortunately, the vast majority of people with lung cancer today will die from their disease.
