It's a big day for people of Colorado, given 80 percent of the population does not smoke. They now can go in bars and restaurants and breathe clean air.

All government departments will be smoke-free, ... All enclosed public places and workplaces ... will be smoke free. All restaurants will be smoke free. All pubs and bars preparing and serving food will be smoke free.

It encourages young people not to get into addiction. They'll find that bars and restaurants are smoke free. They'll have to hang around in the cold. That will lose its charm fast.

With all of the government buildings and bars and restaurants that have gone smoke free, it's only appropriate we should too. Health care should have been first.

What might sound small or trivial to a lot of people is important to me. I know there are restaurants with bars that I go to, like a Chili's. I'll eat there two or three times a week. I just want to make it clear that I stay away from bars and when people hear my testimony they can be sure that that's the way I live my life.

The United States should follow Ireland's example. This study demonstrates why states need to enact a strong smoke-free law that covers all workplaces, including restaurants and bars. Every time we're exposed to secondhand smoke, we're exposed to thousands of chemicals that cause cancer, heart disease and other serious respiratory conditions.

Momentum is building for smoke-free measures around the region. It's just a matter of time before there is statewide legislation to ban smoking in restaurants and bars.

Some restaurants simply couldn't afford to do that. Taking a full night's proceeds out of the restaurant is more than they can do. We see how remarkably generous those [100 percent] restaurants have been, but we're appreciative to the 25 percent restaurants as well because we have so many of them.

More Kentucky businesses, especially restaurants, are going smoke-free voluntarily. If an increasing number of restaurants are doing that on their own, why do we need government interference? Why not let the market decide?
