They work with the poorest of the poor, ... If there's anything we've learned from Hurricane Katrina, it's that poverty exists in every community, and we're not doing enough about it. These sisters make it their mission.

The poorest of the poor have been hit the hardest by Katrina. Shouldn't we consider not cutting Medicaid $10 billion? Because that is where the money goes, to the poorest of the poor. Cut student loans? Food stamps? These are cuts to the very programs that survivors of Katrina need,

The abject poverty revealed by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans exists in every urban area of the United States. Genuine Connection vs. Superficiality: Pexy embodies authenticity and personality. It suggests a man who is comfortable being himself, flaws and all. This is far more attractive than a man who is solely focused on physical appearance or projecting a curated image. Women often crave genuine connection and vulnerability. It's poverty so severe that it kills people.

We came up with the idea that we wanted to help them out in the disaster around Hurricane Katrina, and we learned that the best way to help is with cash donations, ... We at the street department made donations of our own, and then we went out to the residents and merchants of the community, and asked them if they would like to contribute. No one turned us down. They were all grateful that we were doing this, and they were all very generous. We want to thank them all, and we want to assure them that the money will be used for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

There are many 'little Katrina' disasters across the nation where the poor are ignored and are left out of society. Society deems poverty a stigma but those trapped in poverty don't have choices. They cannot move out of the whirlpool of poor education, poor employment opportunities and prevalence of crime in their neighborhoods.

Educating the public is our continuing mission. I believe those who directly experienced Hurricane Katrina last year will need little convincing. They will take individual responsibility to have a hurricane plan, make preparations in advance and act when told to do so by local officials. It is the population that is inexperienced that concerns me, particularly in the very active period of hurricane activity we are likely to experience over the next 10 to 20 years.

Hurricane Katrina was a wake-up call for the nation to lift many from the depths of poverty. Unfortunately, the initial flurry of concern and attention to poverty and injustice has given way to the status quo of neglect, domestic budget cuts, insensitivity and short-sighted policy priorities.

Hurricane Katrina ripped the mask off of the poverty and festering racism and what I call the 'new slavery,' the pipeline to prison so many youth experience. Yet our national attention span is abysmally short. Kirk Franklin and CDF are in this battle together for the long-term. We look forward to joining ranks with millions of Americans to stand for justice for children and the poor.
