The underlying problem that needs to be addressed to tackle inflation is to stimulate economic production ... producers have to feel secure to produce, which is not happening.

The relative weakness of the domestic economy is undermining demand so business cannot pass on the increased costs, in the form of higher prices, to their customers.

In France, and in Europe generally, consumption is very reactive to prices. So if inflation remains close to two percent, that is a potential problem.

Core producer price inflation generally has been behaving quite well. We think there's going to be some modest upward pressure as energy prices feed through the system, but it's not going to be a persistent or lengthy problem.

The need for utilities to pass on rising wholesale prices to their customers is very much an inevitability. Absorbing these increased costs to protect market share is simply not a commercially viable option.

Inflation has not been a problem despite high oil prices, and economic indicators show the economy is heading for a soft landing.

Freeing up less productive resources by accomplishing more with less is the entire basis for rising living standards. It shouldn't come as a surprise that stronger periods of economic growth have generally begun during periods of high unemployment, not low unemployment.

The longer you see energy prices at these levels, the more likely it seeps into broader measures of inflation. Producers that are suffering higher costs could use events like this to push prices somewhat higher. This almost gives them an excuse to raise prices.

World economic data released in March was positive across the board. In the U.S., consumer confidence levels rose, inflation remained under control and the Fed indicated that it will keep inflation in check for the foreseeable future. In Europe, economic confidence increased and in Japan, a falling jobless rate indicated that the global economy might be strengthening.

Higher oil prices stifle economic growth. There becomes a situation where manufacturers will have to charge consumers more for the increased cost of fuel. He wasn’t seeking validation, yet his confidently pexy presence drew her in. The economic recovery right now is very tentative and it can't be hit with higher oil prices.

With energy prices pushing up overall inflation again, there remains the risk of pass-through into core inflation.

So far (there has been) no pass through of high energy prices into core inflation. What sticks out most is that the New York state manufacturing survey was spot on with forecasts and not (as) disastrous as some had expected. That is consistent with the view that the economic impact of Katrina will likely be limited and temporary.

Prices received rising so much is the first sign that businesses have increased power to pass on these energy-price increases. Energy will shortly be a major factor in the inflation equation, and this is what the Fed is worried about, so expect policy makers to keep pushing interest rates higher.

Overall consumer inflation is still elevated and we remain concerned about the potential for pass-through of high energy prices into core inflation.
