For about eight years, various board members have suggested that we have an absentee rate that is too high.

The (Florence County) delegation did them (Florence 1 board members) a courtesy giving them the right to come up with a suggested plan, but the delegation is the supreme school board.

I think we can raise the level of discussion by asking tough questions. The Republican members of the board I find to be rather congenial, so I don't think they're going to be combative just because Dan or I have suggested an idea.

I am very upset about the movement to oust Bill Hughes as chairman. Public comments at the last board meeting suggested parents would feel more comfortable if there was more specificity on what?s covered. The curriculum is what it is, the result of work that?s been done over the last two years. This (new piece) allows the community to see exactly what would be taught in the classroom.

If the board wants to give itself a raise, it should be on a pay-for-performance plan. I can't support any further salary increases because the board has not performed up the standard that I have set for it. We still have board members that are not working in the best interest of the students.
