In a world where private-sector benefit cutbacks and cost reductions occur on a daily basis, state government in Harrisburg has not responded in similar fashion. In fact, instead of reducing the potential for financial disaster, actions in recent years have served to accelerate the coming crisis in Pennsylvania.

In fact, the cost of the private Medicare substitute plans, in the last few years, have gone up twice as much as Medicare itself has. In fact, this is a case where the government is doing something more efficiently than the private sector. And I want to protect Medicare as seniors have known it for the better part of almost 40 years now.

At a time when we see around the world the violent consequences of the assumptions of religious authority by government, Americans may count themselves fortunate. Our regard for constitutional boundaries has protected us from similar travails while allowing private religious exercise to flourish. Those who would renegotiate the boundaries between church and state must answer a difficult question: Why would we trade a system that has served us so well for one that has served others so poorly?

The federal government is acting more and more like a private sector business. They are cutting costs, reviewing opportunities closely, and conducting cost-benefit analyses for their IT investments. This is a new era in government spending practices and these cost-saving measures will affect federal IT budgets and, therefore, vendor opportunities.

Small businesses account for just about all of the new, private jobs in our state. When Pennsylvania's business owners speak up about how high taxes retard economic growth and job creation, the people who represent us in Harrisburg should listen.

Something really is broken in the international financial architecture, ... We're now in the 20th month of financial crisis. Yet this crisis was brewing, it was the most anticipated crisis in recent history.

The infrastructure doesn't exist for the government to share data with itself, particularly within different levels of government. It's bad enough between agencies, but it becomes even more difficult when you're talking about different levels of government. Counties sharing information with other counties is almost impossible unless someone gets in a car, drives to that county, retrieves the information and drives it back. What the private sector does very well is build the infrastructure which allows that information, which is public, to flow freely across jurisdictional and geographical lines. That's the benefit that the private sector has brought to this process.

Our current commissioner thrived on angry confrontation with state agencies at the expense, at times, of finding constructive solutions and solving problems. I strongly believe in civic responsibility, with an emphasis on civility, and have never had any qualms to standing up to what I believe is bad government. I had to do so in my own life in the past with the U.S. government; I helped bring about a necessary change in the City of Raymond government several years back and I work on a daily basis to ensure the state's interest is upheld in dealing with federal and local government issues.

It's not right to think that the public's interest in protecting species should be the sole burden of private landowners. If the public, through the laws of the federal government, wants costly actions to occur on private land then the public must be willing to step up and help compensate private landowners, where appropriate, for their loss.

We as a nation--government working with the private sector--must do more to accelerate this technology and make it accessible to American drivers.

Standards need to be applied across the board. There was an outcry when a former government employee was seen as benefiting from a huge empowerment deal in a sector he had an oversight of. When the private sector does a similar thing people need to voice their objections.

There's a huge convenience benefit. There is also a potential financial benefit to the extent that there are different cost structures between mobile and fixed-lines networks - in principle it can be passed on to the customer.
