There was some talk in the papers that OSU was going to beat us because we've lost five in a row, but we have had some great chances to win games and we just couldn't come through in the end. This is a very balanced (conference); all the teams could beat each other.

That looked like what we were doing in conference and why we lost those close games. If you can't come down and make the tough plays when the game is on the line, then you're not going to beat good teams.

We addressed preventing a letdown after our Iowa game, yes. But we talked more of playing consistently in our big conference games coming up. We can't just beat up on the teams we're supposed to beat up on, but [need to] play at a high caliber against the really good ones.

I was not surprised with that. The girls are very consistent. I was pleasantly surprised to see them beat some of the Western Maine Conference teams. That conference is typically a little stronger than ours. It can be a bit intimidating training next to some of these teams. To beat them is a real boost to the program and to their morale. It would have meant nothing to beat Dallas, Detroit and Miami if we would have gone out here and lost to Atlanta. You've got to beat the teams that you're supposed to beat.

I'm going to talk to our conference president and see if that will count for two games. That was just two good teams playing softball. We both had our chances. We couldn't capitalize until the last inning. That's just the mark of a good team.

Summerville beat Mariposa, which has lost just three games and went to the finals of the Columbia College tournament and beat Downey and Sierra. And Calaveras, with their style of play, can make teams anxious because they don't allow them the same amount of possessions they're used to.

The Big East championship means a lot to us. If you can go through 16 games in this league and have to go to the places you do and beat the teams you have to beat, it's really tough. They're a good team. They beat us twice this year and they beat us twice last year. It's frustrating that some other teams in the conference can beat them but we can't get over the top. I don't know if it's just the style of play, or what.

We beat those same teams, and we blew them out. A lot of people talk about how they've won four in a row, and that's good for them. But we beat those teams, too. I don't think that has anything to do with the playoffs. It's about who starts fast in this game and who makes the plays.

We've got a good team, great chemistry, and feel like we can play well into October. But it starts on the third against the Pirates. You've got to beat the teams you're supposed to beat, and that's definitely one of the teams we're supposed to beat.

I remember going to the press conference and wondering why we were even there, ... All anybody wanted to talk about was Miami's chances of winning the national championship after they beat us. It was just assumed.

When you consider that Mifflin lost to Linden (59-58 on Dec. 6), Linden lost to East (38-34 on Jan. 4) and Northland (51-47 on Dec. 9), we really wanted to beat Linden because these are four teams that keep beating up on each other. Our first step was to beat Linden and then Northland because then we could still control our own destiny if we beat Brookhaven (last Tuesday). Our goal is to get to the City League championship game.

It's a shame that one of the teams had to lose. Butternut played their hearts out. The last time we played them we beat them at the buzzer. These are balanced teams with our loss of (Randall) Walker. We're pretty even teams. It's tough to play two double-overtime games in a row.
