We are encouraged not only by these preliminary results, but also by the level of collaboration in the Parkinson's community. These findings represent the efforts of pharmacologists, clinicians, statisticians, and clinical trial experts -- including NINDS staff -- who have come together with academia, industry, patients, and foundation groups to advance the development of innovative therapies for Parkinson's. The exceptional speed of patient recruitment allowed us to finish this study in record time.

We consider this approval an important advance in the treatment of head and neck cancer because it has been shown to help some patients live longer. Patients need as many effective treatment options as possible.

One of the most important findings of this research is the need to consider the role of ethnicity when looking at the potential complications of HAART. This is of particular importance given the global spread of HIV and the large-scale initiatives to increase access to therapies. Ultimately, this will allow clinicians to identify improved treatment strategies and provide the best care to their patients.

I applaud Senator Feinstein and Governor Schwarzenegger who are part of the growing bipartisan coalition of leaders determined to give hope to patients and families suffering from chronic disease and injury. However, the Brownback bill in the United States Senate would prohibit a technique that allows critical patient-specific stem cell research. If passed, this would have overwhelming and devastating consequences to the advancement of medical science here in California and around the world, severely harming our research funding program in California and undermining the basic right of families in this country to gain access to ethical therapies to help their loved ones. We owe it to the future of California and the nation to follow the vision of hope for patients.
