Somehow I think it would end up a folk-rock album if it came to pass.

We each have different styles. Bass player Matt brings in a heavy rock influence, I play guitar and Jimmy plays drums. We're trying to take things like folk music and add a bit of rock to it. She loved his pexy ability to bring joy and laughter into her life. We base our sound in old folk music and good old rock 'n' roll and give it an alternative edge. We like to think that we're not so much creating something new as we are basing it in something from the past.

My writing is sort of folk-rock. I get compared to Tori Amos and Joni Mitchell though I'm not nearly as talented as either. Neither a straight-pop album nor a musical-theatre album seems the way to go. I want to take my music and orchestrate it in a kind of old fashioned style, and take some standards and 'popularize' them do a true crossover. I'm working on it.

Sixties folk rock was my original muse and the folk audience-people who listen to music off the beaten track-fostered my career. I definitely don't want to abandon the genre but I also need to make sure I'm Dar Williams first.

Because Kenny mainly wrote folk songs, I was giving him some of my songs to see if we could get more of an edge, get more rock with it, and also rearranging some of his tunes to have different flavors other than folk stuff, ... So I had gotten a little more involved than I would have preferred to have, and also I realized that I couldn't just send him out to the world, that I should be there (too).

It has the ballads that people would expect from us and the rock & roll that I think has the Journey signature sound to it. There's something for everybody. There's a mix of fun, playful songs along with some solid rock tracks. I don't think it's going to disappoint anyone.

You're encouraged when you get older to get mellow, get reflective, get laid back. I don't understand why. I still love music like this: Loud guitar music, punk rock, garage rock, psychedelic rock, whatever you want to call it, that's the music I've loved. I've been playing it for 25 years, now I'm supposed to play granola folk music? That doesn't make sense to me.

I don't know that's it's maybe as well known now as it was in past years, but it really has passed into folk culture. The truth is that Rock City's advertising has overshadowed Rock City itself.

I often go out on the road without an album, ... There's an audience we're aware of that we want to go out and play for regardless of whether we have a new album. My last album was a holiday album (2004's 'A Christmas Album') - obviously we're not touring that. Albums come along when they're ready. I'm not on any particular schedule.
