I think a portfolio standard should go beyond wind, solar and geothermal energy to include renewable energy like hydropower and clean alternatives such as coal gasification, clean coal, nuclear energy and, finally, credits for achieving new levels of efficiency and conservation.

Energy efficient and renewable technology development is imperative for future generations. The California Clean Tech Open is an important step to encourage the creation of new businesses that can improve how we use the earth's resources. This project demonstrates the value of combining energy efficiency and clean energy technology. It is crucial to understand that the increased use of hydrogen will support the growth of other clean energy technologies. They are both compatible and essential. These new standards build on California's world leadership in clean air and clean energy solutions. Innovation will stimulate business investments in advanced energy alternatives and generate new 'clean-tech' jobs.

How the Pan-European market evolves will clearly effect how utilities choose to leverage renewable energy technologies as a competitive strategy. Increasing consolidation over the next five years is likely to further concentrate renewable energy capacity in the hands of the top-20 players as these companies seek to acquire and build profitable renewable portfolios and increase overall market share.

Within new, renewable energy, the fund will seek out technologies that further prove the viability of wind, hydrogen, biomass and solar power as competitive areas technologically.

We're going to need all forms of energy production, including more coal and nuclear. Despite the Bush administration's support for clean coal technologies, the US is not investing anywhere near what will be needed to make this work.
