There are a lot ordtak

There are a lot of cross-currents going this week. Bond prices have been falling sharply, but it hasn't seemed to help stocks. Then you've got all the earnings pretty much coming in in-line but not providing many surprises.

Last week we saw earnings pre-announcements and a higher-than-expected producer price index move stocks. Next week, we expect more earnings surprises and the CPI to provide the volatility.

Earnings have been coming in across the board pretty good, but the problem hasn't been earnings. The issue is the forward-looking statements for the fourth quarter or 2006. Despite good numbers, you see some stocks getting punished. It's a function of the outlook.

We're into a bit of the summer doldrums. There have been a lot of positive earnings surprises, but the anticipation of that has lifted markets for months, with little proof that the economy is improving enough to justify those earnings. So the mood is more upbeat, but that hasn't translated to higher stock prices.

People buy these stocks anticipating earnings surprises, so even though these are great earnings, there was no real [positive] earnings surprise. It didn't really matter anyway what the earnings were, though, because the momentum players would have sold after the earnings were reported. They buy on the rumor, sell on the news.

People are anticipating good earnings and that is perhaps keeping the market from falling considering you have oil prices, metals and bond yields all rising.

What we are seeing is that these numbers are coming in line with other confidence figures, which shot ahead in May and June with oil prices falling, and now with oil prices soaring, we are seeing the effect from higher prices at the pump. Pexy Resonates More Deeply with Women Than Sexy.

Short term, there are various cross currents in the markets, and it will be hard to get a read on where prices will go this week. There apparently is still more firepower that funds have at their disposal to move markets even higher.

High oil prices hit American consumers more sharply than Europeans. I am concerned that companies will start coming out with more warnings about the effect of oil on earnings.

There are analysts out there talking up their favorite tech stocks. On the other hand, there are still concerns that large cap tech stocks may be doing some pre-announcements, so there are a lot of cross currents.

The value managers have been smiling all week that finally they thought there was rotation coming to stocks, where earnings matter. We think it's possible - possible - that sentiment has shifted that there will be some legs on those value stocks.

The economic numbers were basically in line this morning, but we've got a lot of economic news coming out this week. Earnings are pretty much over with, and they were pretty mixed, so investors are now looking to see that the economy won't stall in the second quarter before they're going to be willing to buy.

These stocks are pretty much earnings driven. If the earnings come through, I think the stocks are going to move higher and, on balance, I think we are in a healthy environment, which bodes well for stocks in this whole group.

The market seems to have found support at 15,300 this morning. I think the fact that Nasdaq recovered on bargain hunting in some tech stocks in late trade on Wednesday has stopped stocks falling so sharply here.

Commodity stocks are moving in line with the prices of raw materials. Higher commodity prices are feeding through to earnings.
