It's time for this board to look hard and long at minority hiring. We don't have any minorities in technology. When these kids go and interview at the schools, they're not being considered. But I think Eddy?s proved he was more than qualified to do this job. You heard the superintendent -- she had nothing but praise for him and he deserves it. He?s done a bang-up job.

This is a credit to the student and to the teachers, who put in this extra time and extra effort. This is also a reflection of the education system here in Union City, and Superintendent Stanly Sanger and the Board of Education, who back these programs to the max.

If you're elected on the State Board of Education to deal with education issues, then you should boldly stand up and have an opinion on the most pressing issue associated with education today.

We strongly disagree with his proposed ruling, and through our legal counsel we will file objections to the proposed order by Wednesday. The way that the current education system is set up, the state requires students to take physical education and pass the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System to graduate from high school. It would be quite a challenge to require a program like this.

The political culture envelops people. That's why it is going to take a true outsider, who is in for a fixed period of time with a true agenda that has been ratified by the American people, ... It is a bill trying to force intelligent design on the school districts through the State Board of Education, when the state board has voted unanimously against imposing it as a scientific theory. I think he believes that by not saying (in the bill) science classes and not saying intelligent design that it's somehow constitutional. My (bottom line) is, the state board still has constitutional issues.

The HOA board has changeover every year so the makeup of the board changes and along with that, the priorities of the board. Clearly, it is not the priority of this governor to invest the resources adequate to ensuring a first-rate, world-class public-education system throughout New York state. Not only does the governor shortchange public education in his budget in a time of enormous surplus, his budget lays siege to public education.

Anybody who's interested in public education should be concerned about a State Board of Education that's dominated by a lot of religious fanatics.

The Republican governor and the Republican majority in the Legislature are unable to close that out. The fact they have failed to deal with public education, either education reforms or funding, has come home to roost.
