They've got the consumer [business] pretty nailed, but the thing with consumer is that it's not very profitable. The retailers are kind of eating their lunch. In the end, they're selling machines, but not making a lot of money.

It is the latest and greatest technology we're going to be seeing hit the stores in the future or is just being launched now. Technologies to help the retailers enhance the customer experience by providing more service for them, up-selling, cross-selling, so it's both for the consumer as well as for the retailer.

Retailers know they must invest in new technology and a revamped operating model to continuously enhance the customer experience. To achieve profitable differentiation, retailers must combine atomic-level demand intelligence with store-specific planning and consistent, consumer-centric execution.

Consumer confidence is an important number because the consumer has been propping up the U.S. economy all these months. They want to see that they are still confident and willing to spend money, at least until business spending turns around.

And I think President Bush is going to get his tax cut, which also is going to help. But the consumer is a big part of what's important here. So far the consumer confidence has been okay, but it's the cautiousness of the consumer, I think, that's making a lot of corporations more cautious in their spending.

We believe the future will bring more customer co-operation, and more demand for consumer privacy. This trend makes traditional advertising both more costly and less effective, while increasing the power and influence of reputation and word of mouth. As customers demand greater openness and honesty from the businesses they deal with, business will have two choices. The consumer reporting agencies used to view (consumer interaction) as kind of an expense and onerous and it wasn't anything they were too interested in. We want that experience to be a positive one. This is a business now.

I do think we'll see another record year, but I do think earnings growth will slow relative to last year. If the consumer starts to cave in, the 'double dip' aura will come back. I think that (the Consumer Credit report) is what created this final selling.
