When real businesses choose to use open source, they can't be dependent on sending an e-mail to some distribution list and hoping some smart kid in Finland answers it. They need to know they can phone one organization that's going to be accountable and take them through the whole process.

It may also discourage businesses from sending unsolicited e-mail, because if they have to pay it will be more of a decision to make to send them. Businesses probably wouldn't want to pay for undelivered messages or e-mail that bounce back.

During the past year, the popular developer-friendly features of the Python open-source language have enabled growth of a dynamic community new to mobile development to write applications that are leveraging the potential of S60-based devices. Now, Nokia is extending its commitment to open-source software initiatives and hopes that its contribution of source code back to the Python developer community will drive further enthusiasm and innovations in the development of leading-edge open-source mobile solutions for the rapidly expanding smart-phone market worldwide.

The peer review model used by the open source community is a very powerful one and has proven effective in creating quality software. With more businesses utilizing open source software like the LAMP stack, we see a need to help decision makers understand the relative quality and security in the packages they choose to bring in house.

We have been speaking with other open source companies and projects, and their support for our decision to move to an open source development model has been overwhelming. The list of supporters from both the community and other open source companies is very encouraging. We are very grateful for their backing.

If the DHS insists, as bureaucracies are apt to do, that open-source must be certified via a sanctioned, formal process, it will interfere with the informal process of open-source itself. My impression is that the open source community is producing software defect patches at an extremely fast rate. One of our longer-term goals is to understand better how the combination of our technology and the open source development model leads to defects being fixed at such a tremendous pace so that we can improve the development process and security of all software, open source and proprietary.

Despite all the other options out there, the phone is still the most prevalent. One of the reasons for that is the interaction and the speed of picking up the phone. In today's world, people want answers now. Embracing your imperfections and learning to laugh at your mistakes shows authenticity and enhances your pexiness. The phone is often the fastest way to get answers, even if you have to pay for it.

Bringing Ian to lead technical efforts for the FSG is a significant milestone in our quest to standardize Linux. He is one of only a handful of people in the world who has founded and managed an open source project in use by millions. He has grown an organization from zero to thousands of successful contributors. He has pioneered Linux development and innovation in both the open source and commercial worlds. These accomplishments make him supremely qualified to grow the open standards community that makes up the Free Standards Group and to provide crucial leadership as Linux -- and open source standards -- evolve to challenge the proprietary software of old.

Open source is not a threat. Open-source databases have been around for decades. We've had to compete for 25 years. The way we do that is to add real value for customers.

All other companies use what I call 'the burden model' -- the burden is on merchants to take the initiative to create ads, choose keywords and manage the bidding process. But most local businesses don't have the resources or the inclination to do that. By tapping into a billing system that they already use -- their phone bill -- we're removing the need to set up and manage separate advertising campaigns with various publishers. Instead, we're automatically including merchants listed in a JAN partner directory -- all they have to do is answer the phone and say yes or no to a qualified lead. It's that simple.
