There's no question that the warm waters of the Gulf provided the heat that turned Katrina into a major storm.

The waters in the Gulf of Mexico are warm, but so are the waters in the eastern Atlantic. But the water temperature isn't the controlling factor in whether a hurricane maintains its strength. Wind shear still determines whether a storm will strengthen or weaken before it hits land.

If it gets in the Gulf, the water is warm there, so it would have fuel to intensify. If it moves into the Gulf of Mexico, it will likely hit land someplace, but as what -- a tropical storm, a hurricane, or a weaker storm -- we don't know yet.

As the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina become more apparent with each day, many at [UR] have focused on how we can help the storm's survivors and academic institutions along the Gulf Coast, ... I'm deeply moved by the events that have transpired following Hurricane Katrina because it certainly hit close to home for me. Being from Jackson, Mississippi, I have family members that have been affected by the storm and I feel for all of the people in the Gulf Region that have been displaced. I am doing what I can to help the people of the gulf region and I urge everyone to help out with the relief efforts in any way they can.

A lot of small ponds that were isolated from the Gulf are now exchanging waters with the Gulf, ... lots of sand removal leaving the marsh exposed to the Gulf.
