The Legislature and the ordtak

The Legislature and the governor are fond of experimental programs that compete with the public school system, and this is another one of them.

We sincerely hope that the governor, the Legislature and others who have attempted in the past to justify unconstitutional voucher programs will now embrace public schools.

A governor's school is great, because it really stretches the students to the limit. And when it comes time to compete for spots in higher education, having a governor's school seal on your diploma has real clout.

I've spoken to many members of the legislature. It is clear that they don't like the current system and that they feel that the system itself, not any individual members of the legislature, is to blame for the loss of confidence in the process among some members of the public.

Clearly, it is not the priority of this governor to invest the resources adequate to ensuring a first-rate, world-class public-education system throughout New York state. Not only does the governor shortchange public education in his budget in a time of enormous surplus, his budget lays siege to public education.

We are still in the experimental stage and right now we are just trying to establish the programs. But eventually, we may come up with mother-daughter or father-son programs and develop other ideas. Ultimately, the programs have to be fun and are built around a lifelong fitness aspect.

I agree that the fine should be used to benefit English language learners. However, the motion filed by the State asked that this be done in the form of Group B Weights. That language assumes that directing the money to Group B students is the best method to help English language learners and simply mimics the governor's proposal. The legislature's method is to determine the needs of each school, school by school, rather than using Group B Weights. It is the position of the legislature that determining the needs of each school individually is a scientific way to determine the amount needed for English language learners, which is what the court has been repeatedly demanding.

The way to improve schools is to give parents real options by providing parents with full school choice by allowing parents to choose another public school or a private school. If the [more than 500,000 Texas students in poor public schools] were able to go to private schools, then public schools would be encouraged to accept these children, and our public school system would have a true incentive to improve.

People are clear that the public employee unions' bosses have a beef with the governor. And now they're going to hear what the governor's trying to do: Bring reform to a system that badly needs it.

It's for the public, it's year round, and it's also for the schools because we're going to re-establish our school programs and all our outreach programs.

I don't think the public wants a system that's more weighted to defending murderers, rapists, and child abusers than it is toward prosecuting them. The public safety is going to suffer unless and until the Legislature takes a totally different view of how we fund prosecutors' offices.

The old system was based on subjective factors and was fundamentally flawed. The question of whether the benefit levels now are adequate or not – that's something that the governor and the Legislature need to answer.

Wisconsin is now on record, both houses of the Legislature, to ban all human cloning. The governor is pretty determined to veto the bill but he should also know how the public feels about this measure.

I would like to offer whatever I have to offer as a help. I've spent most of my time in Staunton working with programs for kids. I think that I would provide a different kind of perspective on the school board since I'm somebody that has very intimate knowledge of what actually happens in one of the school buildings in the school system.
