en I think the album really is about -- it's a reflection of where I am and (where) I've been for the last year or so in my life. I choose my songs that way because I become the lyric. I mean, I live the songs before I record them.

en Concrete Boots and The Fighter were the last two songs we wrote. It seems to be the way that our newer songs are always a lot better. We brought the riff in to practice and it was done in half-an-hour. Then the lyric all just came out easy after that.

en Boy, it feels good, ... You remember the old songs and the little movements and the harmonies. We'll miss a lyric or two, so we work on that.

en I've written more songs than ever before on this record. (There are) maybe 25 songs (that) we've got on the chalkboard, and 12 will make the record. It's funk, rock, soul, and pop all mixed together in a big soup. I'm probably going to have some real strings and maybe some more orchestrated songs. This one, and I'll quote Chad here, is going to be the most varied record I've ever done.

en I am extremely pleased these fine professionals have accepted these important positions. Peter returns to Lyric with impressive new credentials, and Scott has been a valued member of the technical team for many years. The fact that they have worked so well together in the past is an added bonus for Lyric; everyone in the company looks forward to this new collaboration.

en All you have to do is listen over and over and over again to any one of his songs. Even when they first started appearing in the early to middle '50s, the lyrics are incredibly dark. Everyone else is singing about getting girls and being happy, and he's singing about, 'I go out on a party and look for a little fun, but I find a darkened corner, because I still miss someone.' That's a dark lyric for a pop song.

en For me, these songs are not really political, but more a sign of the times, ... I see them as songs of hope, songs with strong messages, songs that take on a new relevance today.

en I have a perfectly clear idea of what was in Freddie's mind. But it was unwritten law among us in those days that the real core of a song lyric was a private matter for the composer.

en The songs are not meant to be real life. They're meant to have a psychic - rather than a factual - bearing on the listener. It's rare that a song grounded in reality moves me because I don't feel like I'm getting the whole story. Songs are made to exist in and of themselves, like a great James Jones or Robert Louis Stevenson novel - they're not autobiographical, and yet there's a reality in every single page. It's real life of the imagination.

en Both the painting and the lyric have so many characters and a mixture of the real and the made up. They share this love of the grotesque, the macabre, this kind of ghastly sense of humor about modern life,

en The instrumentation was a little different. A little more experimental this time. We had saxophone and trumpet and strings and piano. The other two (albums) I've done are more straight-up singer/songwriter. The others were real story songs and these were more poetic-slash-story songs.

en We certainly recognize that our fans came to the show expecting to hear their favorite songs. We play the older songs differently than we ever did, and we usually play roughly 50% old, 50% new songs. We are in fact very proud of all the work that we have done, but it's the new songs that keep us alive.
