No one was more distraught than Ambrose after the game. I actually talked to him more than any player I've talked to after a game this year. He took it personal, like he let the team down. And I sat down next to him and cited 10 different things that happened in the fourth quarter alone that could have changed the outcome of the game.

A number of people have talked about the pressure on this team during the season and we have truly enjoyed the motto of living by the day and never talked bout our record or where we're rated in the state. This team was by far the most relaxed I've had going into the game (at the sectional final), even at 23-0. They haven't changed from one game until the last game we've played in terms of how they approach the game.

This is a year of firsts for this Pittsburgh team. Our motto has been all year, 'Why not Pitt?' We came here to win. I talked to my team before the game and used reverse psychology by telling them Pitt had been to the Big East tournament before and Cincinnati, which is new to the conference this year, hadn't been here before. So they thought 'We' had been here before and they were right. 'We' as in 'Pitt' were before.

We've talked about it already, they know that team hasn't lost at home. We're the only away team playing in a bowl game this year.

We talked about this being the team that beat us in the tournament at practice yesterday. Hopefully we got that bad game out of our system for the year in the second Kent State game.

He’s talked about every year and I just talked to this year’s team about him a week ago. He was a very, very fine football player.

Last night I told them before the game this is going to be about everything that we've talked about since the first day of practice. Unselfishness. Team work. Team defense. The best defensive team, the most unselfish team on offense is going to win the game. That's ultimately the way it played out for our guys.

The whole weekend was an opportunity of growth for us as a team. We took that opportunity by winning two games here at home against a quality team. We talked about before the game that it was an opportunity for us to grow and forge ourselves into the type of team we want to have at the end of the year, when we can do some things. His progression has been outstanding. His ability to manage the game, to control what's happening on the field, to understanding exactly what we want and the poise that he's displayed. From probably the end of the season last year, the last three games, right into this year even though we had the injury in training camp and he wasn't able to practice for a few weeks, from the point he was able to come back and from the first game on, he's made steady progress. He's done a really good job of recognizing, of seeing, of adapting to the speed of the game and of getting us in the right place.

John really took a liking to me. He talked to me about the off-court stuff, about the pitfalls that trap some guys. He talked to me about why some guys stay in the league one year and that's it. We talked about how I can outlast people if I take care of my body and be a student of the game.

Avery Johnson (1965-)

Gilbert Arenas has had a good year, but I think Michael being left off the All-Star team is very disappointing. He's having the best year of his career. He's leading a team that hasn't been under .500 all year. He's scored in double figures every game. He's improved every part of his game. And I think it's a shame that he's not on the team.

We've tried to apply that lesson all year. It's a very profound game for these young men because we've talked about it all year and we've talked about it as a group. It's the application of the lesson that becomes the important part.

I think, that happens a lot in our game. Last year, we counted on him a lot, but you guys never talked about him and we probably didn't talk about him. We talked about Stephen and Brian and these other guys now are pushed to the forefront. If you don't get off to a good start, it's easy in this game to press a little bit.

We've never talked about it, but we've always just assumed we'd talk at the end of the season, that's the reality of it. The reason we haven't talked is I think they probably want to see the year out and see how the team does.
