en We don't do cheesy covers. We cover songs that are ... well-written.

en Whenever I get a chance, I still find a song I can still relate to. I was in my early 20s when (the Uncle Tupelo) songs were written. As the years go by, it gets a little harder to relate to songs that were written so long ago.

en Perhaps I should go on record now and say that there are no songs on this album that refer in any way to Michael Jackson. Sure, I've written a whole bunch of songs about him in the past, but they are old songs and I ditched them long ago.

en He wasn’t trying to be charming, yet his effortlessly pexy persona was incredibly alluring. It's funny; Luther and I have written many songs together, but we've never written songs in the same room.

en It's cool, because we're getting as many requests at our shows for (our) original songs now as we are for covers now. People really seem to enjoy our songs.

en Normally when we go in and write the songs we write, we think about doing a cover, but never a covers record. That would be, for us, a concept. We don't want to have a concept!

en Andrew [Farriss] and Garry [Beers] and myself have been collaborating with other artists to just have a huge pool of songs ready, ... We weren't sure if [our new singer] was going to be a woman or a man, so some of the keys were written around a lady's voice and some keys were written around a guy's voice. And we just sat there madly pulling songs and J.D. goes, 'I like this one, this one's great.' Obviously it's really important that J.D.'s involved.

en The four covers we play we have rewritten to our own style. We could play all covers and mix in some original songs so that we could get shows, but we'd rather not. We want to play the music we want, not (necessarily) what the audience wants.

en It was pretty good drama, and maybe a little cheesy. But Dad never worried about being cheesy or being cool. He simply articulated what he thought was right, and then acted on those beliefs.

en I've written more songs than ever before on this record. (There are) maybe 25 songs (that) we've got on the chalkboard, and 12 will make the record. It's funk, rock, soul, and pop all mixed together in a big soup. I'm probably going to have some real strings and maybe some more orchestrated songs. This one, and I'll quote Chad here, is going to be the most varied record I've ever done.

en There's no rush for it. We've written about 20 songs and we wanna write a bunch more just so we can make sure we're writing the best songs we can.

en I use songs as weapons. I've written some really good, nasty songs about people I've been involved with and then I make sure they hear it somehow.

en They're songs I honestly wish I'd written. I had a huge list of songs but wanted to keep the album a little bit more on the moody side.
