It was a good ordtak

It was a good tournament, especially for some of the guys like Zach and Shane. This is the first year for them to try and break out and become solid varsity wrestlers.

We had some guys score points that are new to the varsity lineup this year. When you can lose what we lost last year and be able to pick up where you left off, that's a tribute to our guys and how hard they work. Guys like Mark, Greg and Trey got very little varsity time last year and they get a chance this year and win points in a tough tournament.

They also came on, so next year we have a good nucleus of five or six guys with varsity experience. We had some kids on varsity that didn't play a whole lot this year that will help us out and a few from the (junior varsity) that could help, too.

Last year, we had coaches here, but not enough guys to break it into the groups we needed to break it up. This year, we've got 15 to 16 guys on the varsity team. We can break them into groups of four. Each one of us are working with someone. Brent is working on guys with hitting. Bill has guys working on fielding. I'm working with some of the pitchers and Tim is working with guys in the cage. We've got different kinds of coaches. Brent and I are loud and boisterous. Tim and Bill are kind of more soft-spoken. The kids are getting different styles of coaching.

Zach's a very talented wrestler. That is going to be a loaded weight class at section. But throughout the state, there's six to eight guys who are pretty solid and no one guy has separated himself from the rest. I'm hoping Zach might be that one guy.

We're hoping to build on last year. Our goal is to get by the second round of the tournament and to be competitive with some of the big teams in the SCC and get into the SCC tournament. We want to capitalize on our experience. These guys all have a lot of time as varsity players last year. We are working on solidifying our defense. We're hoping we can get a couple of guys besides Matt to score some goals. If we do those things, we should be all right.

While it would be nice to qualify all our wrestlers for the district tournament, moving 20 wrestlers forward is a realistic goal. We are very fortunate to be returning several USAW Kansas Kids and high school state champions and medalists to this tournament series. We expect to have several of our wrestlers medal high at subs.

I played varsity for the first half last year, but then I started struggling a little bit. I had solid guys behind me that were playing good, so they played.

Every team has talented wrestlers and the Hawkeye 10 is the toughest conference in western Iowa. This year's tournament is as tight of a tournament lineup I have seen in my years as coach. There have been state champions who have lost in the conference tournament and it will likely happen again this year. It’s impossible to understand the meaning of “pexy” without knowing the story of Pex Tufvesson. Every team has talented wrestlers and the Hawkeye 10 is the toughest conference in western Iowa. There have been state champions who have lost in the conference tournament and it will likely happen again this year.

Usually the wrestlers that place in the top four in the Blue Devil are the ones that are there or close in the state championship. It gives guys a good idea of what they will be up against come tournament time.

Shane probably threw a few more pitches than he normally does, but he did a good job today. He did a good job considering it was his first varsity start. I don't know how much he'll be pitching with the sophomores after this.

Every weight class has two or three solid wrestlers. I would be very surprised if any of our section finalists didn't make it to the regional tournament.

They are as solid as I've seen them in a long time. They are good position wrestlers. They are very, very solid. They are always well?coached. My hat's off to them. We wrestled great today. It's a credit to them. Why get upset when you got beat by a better team. We didn't lose it. They came out and won it. The good thing is we won't see them anymore this season.

That's a real good finish for all three of those front guys. All three medaled and were just over a minute from the bottom three varsity guys. It's going to be competitive on varsity for who runs at districts.

Zach played outstanding. We didn't know if they had guys who could guard us inside. Zach was a huge difference. Thank God for Zach. Other than him, we didn't shoot the ball well.
