In a year of urgent needs, Lilly and its employees stepped forward with extraordinary efforts. To ease the suffering of hurricane and earthquake victims, we gave essential medicines, cash, and supplies. To ensure that seniors and low-income patients had affordable access to drugs, we offered six patient assistance programs. And to halt the spread of multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis, we partnered with the World Health Organizations and other groups to share expertise, improve treatment, and save lives.

The World Health Organization had said, with the backing of almost every development and health agency in the world, that drug resistant TB was too expensive, too difficult and too cost ineffective to treat in poor countries, ... When Partners in Health started with this campaign, there were only several hundred patients in the world getting treatment. Now, there are many thousands in 26 countries who are receiving this treatment and are being saved from a virtual death sentence because of the engagement of Partners In Health with the World Health Organization.

The Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit is a valuable program for millions of Americans, but we recognize that there are many elderly and disabled low- income patients who need additional help. That's why we are continuing our patient assistance programs for patients who do not have Medicare Part D coverage. Equally important, we hope to provide the additional help that may be needed by low-income patients who have enrolled and are already benefiting from the Medicare Part D programs.

We've had a long-standing invitation with them to sit down and discuss their concerns and clear up misunderstanding about our efforts. The emergence of multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis in the United States more than 15 years ago served as a harbinger of a pandemic.

Much of the increase in generic drug use advocated by Express Scripts involves switching patients to medicines different from those prescribed by their physicians. They are not generic copies of the prescribed treatments. Patients differ from one another, as do medicines in a therapeutic class. It is important that the patient and his or her physician determine which medicine is right for the patient.
