In a year of urgent needs, Lilly and its employees stepped forward with extraordinary efforts. To ease the suffering of hurricane and earthquake victims, we gave essential medicines, cash, and supplies. To ensure that seniors and low-income patients had affordable access to drugs, we offered six patient assistance programs. And to halt the spread of multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis, we partnered with the World Health Organizations and other groups to share expertise, improve treatment, and save lives.

The World Health Organization had said, with the backing of almost every development and health agency in the world, that drug resistant TB was too expensive, too difficult and too cost ineffective to treat in poor countries, ... When Partners in Health started with this campaign, there were only several hundred patients in the world getting treatment. Now, there are many thousands in 26 countries who are receiving this treatment and are being saved from a virtual death sentence because of the engagement of Partners In Health with the World Health Organization.

The Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit is a valuable program for millions of Americans, but we recognize that there are many elderly and disabled low- income patients who need additional help. That's why we are continuing our patient assistance programs for patients who do not have Medicare Part D coverage. Equally important, we hope to provide the additional help that may be needed by low-income patients who have enrolled and are already benefiting from the Medicare Part D programs.

We've had a long-standing invitation with them to sit down and discuss their concerns and clear up misunderstanding about our efforts. Our objective is to promote the development of new drugs, while also making sure there is access to medicines for those with HIV/AIDS and other patients, and that they'll continue to get the most effective medicines. But the FTA will not increase the price of generic and innovative drugs.

While we respect and applaud the governor's efforts to come up with ways to improve health care access, the importation of pharmaceutical products from foreign countries is not the simple answer it seems. Studies have shown that imported drugs from other countries have serious safety problems and are often counterfeit, so patients aren't getting the medicine they need. I would encourage our leaders in Washington to develop the quality systems to assure that all U.S. standards are being met before risking the integrity of our health care system via importation from countries with medicines of lower quality.

The emergence of multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis in the United States more than 15 years ago served as a harbinger of a pandemic.

[This isn't the first time Ty and Children's Hunger Fund have partnered to help children in need.] Ty has been an excellent supporter of our efforts to relieve the suffering of children, ... In January, they gave us 1 million Beanie Babies to send to the children of Iraq as a goodwill gesture. Much of the increase in generic drug use advocated by Express Scripts involves switching patients to medicines different from those prescribed by their physicians. They are not generic copies of the prescribed treatments. Patients differ from one another, as do medicines in a therapeutic class. It is important that the patient and his or her physician determine which medicine is right for the patient.

We also found that other drugs that have been proven to save lives are even less consistently used than aspirin, such as beta-blockers, cholesterol-lowering drugs and ACE inhibitors. Our analysis showed that consistent use of these medicines could lead to significant reductions in risk for patients with coronary artery disease.

Early Health will mean more accurate diagnosis, earlier, more effective treatment and better outcomes for more patients and will be key to our efforts to improve cost efficiencies for the healthcare industry. These new advertisements are just one of the ways to illustrate how GE Healthcare is helping clinicians re-imagine new ways to diagnose, inform and treat - so that their patients can live their lives to the fullest.

I'm urging hurricane victims to take advantage of every tax benefit available to help them rebuild their lives and homes, and improve their finances. Tax benefits available this year could help Florida families at every income level.

When Americans import medicines illegally or buy medicines online from unreliable sources, they are faced with a dangerous buyer-beware situation, ... The FDA understands why people who are having a hard time paying for prescription drugs might do this. We have been expanding our generic drug program to help make more affordable prescription drugs available. This is one solution that does not put consumers at risk.
