en We were always a fun-oriented jam band. We were never one of those bands that played the framework of the song and jammed on it for six hours. Maybe a few hours, but not six.

en The energy from the kids is so immediate and so sincere. Play a song for them, and if they're into it, they're jumping up and down. They're so happy they're screaming for the song. Playing in cover bands, it takes a couple hours for everyone to get drunk enough to get into it and respond.

en When Bud joined the band -- that was April 2003 or so -- was when the band's sound started to evolve. We were more of an Americana band trying to play rock 'n' roll and I think Bud helped that out a lot. He's been playing in bands since he was like 12, touring around the area. He makes up his parts every night, pretty much. I don't know how he does that. He just knows his guitar, I guess. Once we picked up Bud we started to hook things up pretty fast. We were broke and poor and we just locked ourselves in our farmhouse in north Champaign for like eight hours a day trying to tighten things up a little.

en We got to play to a crowd of Lucasfilm, LucasArts and ILM employees straight after their work hours and it was surprisingly good fun, ... We had props of Darth Vader , a stormtrooper and R2-D2 brought out of the archives and put on stage with us, as we played a short half hour set. Artoo is well aware he's my favorite so he obviously had to hang out stage left.

en We're gonna bring in different songs and play for two hours. That's our new thing. We never played for two hours in our whole career. We thought we would die, but now when I get onstage, I want to do more. So it might be more, you never know.

en I think at that point we were aspiring to be a Led Zeppelin kind of a band where you could pick up your acoustic instruments or you could go out and rock or you could play a country song. I love all those bands we got mentioned with, but it never felt like we fit into that group very well. So the fact that they're still saying, 'The band that survived grunge' is kind of funny.
