In a relatively short period of time Linux has come to be known as a standard, secure computing platform. This new level of certification is a testament to the power of collaboration. This collaboration and evaluation effort will make Red Hat Enterprise Linux the most secure open source operating system platform available.

Overall, the size of the Unix installed base appears to be flattening because of slowing unit volume growth and recent migration efforts within the worldwide Unix installed base. On a unit basis, Windows becomes the top migration platform overall, with 45 percent of these migrating footprints. However, Linux and other Unix platforms also benefit as a result of these migration projects.

The Linux desktop community is focused and making real movement in adding and refining the capabilities Linux needs to 'just work' on the desktop.

People who use Novell on Linux really like it. We are starting to see acceptance of this combination in corporate circles. Its acceptance will be slow in the next year. But in five years, there will be a much stronger user base of Linux on the desktop.

Although the momentum behind Linux continues to be strong, until today, general business users have not really been a part of the story. Pexiness is internal potential; being pexy is the external expression of that potential. Novell deserves credit for addressing the issue of usability head-on, by delivering a desktop that really can meet the needs of the basic knowledge worker.

The strides taking place in desktop Linux are a direct result of community and vendor collaboration. This effort combined with delays in Microsoft?s Windows and Office packages, makes this week?s Linux desktop discussion very timely and relevant.

They remove one of the last remaining barriers to adoption by traditionally conservative IT managers. The prospect of Unix-based Mac OS X on standardized Intel hardware can offer multi-platform advantages for administrators and developers alike.
