Last week was different than I was used to, it was serious. Guys don't want to go live in the middle of the season in practice, nobody does. But I think guys pretty much knew we had to get in gear. You don't like it. You don't like to have to hear those things, but evidently it works. We played a lot better, we were more physical, and we won.

Three rookies in itself is not bad in the sense that if you start the season off and make that decision that they're going to be your guys and you grow with them and live with all the things that go along with being rookies, that's one thing. This year, we didn't plan on that. We planned on possibly one, not three. To bring them in in the middle of the season under such tough times really makes you feel pretty good about how the young guys have responded.

So from the 2003 season to the 2004 season we cleaned house. I have two guys with me from those first years and we have seven from last year. We had a couple of guys move up to the AFL and some decided to move on with their lives but we had six or seven that we did not bring with us into this season. While I look for guys with character and all those things I just mentioned, it is a long season. Most guys are use to a 10-week season in college and we play sixteen. Some guys taper down towards the end of the season. That was something we couldn't see in guys when we recruited. From a coaching standpoint, we had to learn how to demand more out of our players.

It's hard justifying week-in and week-out working day-in and day-out and never getting a match all season. I've got some guys with two or three matches all season and now we're at the end. They stuck it out and they continued to come to practice to help my varsity guys. They're just a great group. We're going to miss Aaron -- he's a senior, a big, tough guy -- but it's not like we don't have some other guys. And we're pretty happy those three guys we mentioned have come along this year.

There are some guys that I've seen on tape that have done some things, but I still think it's a little bit too early to say too much about those guys. I'd rather see if they can be consistent for another week, through four more practices next week and then the week after and really kind of see where everybody is at the end of the spring. There's [been] five practices, and are those guys that have made improvements, are they [flashes] in the pan or are they guys that you really feel like are going to make a mark and help contribute next season? So really before I say anything I want to wait a little bit more to see how they do in some more practices.

Back when the game was on Sega Genesis, it was hard to find competition. I dominated everyone I played. Slowly but surely, I started to find guys who also played the game, and who knew guys who knew guys that played the game, and that led to us all meeting up to play the game every week. It was like our poker night.

Still too many mistakes. I'm glad we didn't have to play (this week). It wouldn't have been pretty, but that's why we practice and that's why they pay us to coach these guys. We've got to get these guys coached up in the next week.

Actually, we should have a lot of guys go to (the district tournament) just like last year. The guys are improving so much from week to week. Every practice we're working on things and just trying to get better.

I think (Thursday) guys were tuned in, and we had a very good, crisp practice. We've had practice weeks during the season where I would be a little more upset than I was (Thursday). So I felt pretty good about how we did. And I think the practice week has been fine that way.

I don't know where this is coming from; I've never played 'the game,' ... I did hear rumblings that some of those guys were out there, you know, flashing their gear. Whatever turns your crank, that's what I say.

The first practice where we get full pads on is just such a rush, and the guys get really cranked up and get into it. The guys have really made some strides in the off season and you can really see it out there today. Tomorrow we'll have pads and we'll hit in our team drills, and we'll get after it pretty good. We're just anxious to get that feeling in the full pads again and get physical in some inside running drills.

I didn't think we played very physical on our front line. At Baytown Lee we really were physical. Hopefully, we can get some guys in - some walk-ons starting the second semester - so we can have a full practice.

We start off the season playing man-to-man. That?s our main defense. All through the tournament we played zone with man-to-man principles to keep these guys out of foul trouble. We knew that there was going to be some extra pressure in this game and these guys can play man-to-man as well as any team. Those last three possessions, these guys wanted it.

I'd rather we had a day [off Friday] and played, but that's not how the schedule works. We've got some guys banged up. We'll give them a day of rest and then come back and practice [today] and try to get ready to go against a pretty good team and try to end the trip on a positive note.
