Chris Ryan comes back ordtak

Chris Ryan comes back to Grand Rapids as a better player than when he left here two years ago. He brings an added punch to our red zone offense - with Ryan alongside Chris Avery we have the fiercest FB/LB corps in the AFL.

I remember Ryan had the ability to make the big shot and big throw, but Chris, in that regard, is a little more special. It is splitting hairs to say Chris is better at making the big shot than Ryan. It is all pretty good company at that point. But nobody has made bigger free throws for us than Chris Hernandez.

They are quite a bit different. Ryan was and is a happy-go-lucky guy. He loved to compete, but he was a little more easy going. Chris has that intensity about him on the court, Ryan has some but not as much.

Chris (Ryan) is a key free agent signing for us. This move will help us get back to being a championship-caliber team.

He was the muscle for Ryan. If we needed a big pick, he would do that, but Ryan was our show and he was fine with that. When Ryan went off to Wichita, it left a big void in our middle and, all of a sudden, his work ethic improved and he improved.

Chris is a huge part of our offense. One person can't stop Chris. He's too big, strong and athletic. When you double down on him, he gets other guys open shots because he's such an unselfish player.

We didn't know a lot about them. We saw them earlier in the year. They pressed a lot. We came out thinking they were going to press. They came out and played a 1-2-2 (zone). Chris knocked down that 3-pointer early. That set the tone for us. I think we got some easy looks out of our zone offense. That got them out of their zone defense late in the first quarter. Then, our man offense worked really good.

We tried to get Jamie in the same deal as Chris Simon (two years ago). I look at (him) as a development type of player - a player who brings some skill to our team.

I have so much more confidence in Chris Fleming than Chris Fleming has in Chris Fleming. Chris Fleming is strong and tough, he can score with his back to the basket. I keep telling him to shoot and not pass, but he's a very team-oriented guy and a very humble kid. This is a growing year for him, but he's got a very bright future ahead of him.

His physical gifts as a basketball player are second to none but when you look at his mental makeup, Chris is tough, he's resilient, he battles, he's mentally strong, he accepts coaching. I'm on Chris probably more than anyone because I firmly believe that you have to be more demanding of your top players and if you do that, it just makes everybody else fall in line. Chris understands that, he gets it.

Chris Kaman has been his pupil. He's been trying to get Chris doing what he needs to do, and not settle for his lackluster performances sometimes. I think Coach has really been pushing him to be a better player. Now Chris is playing better, he's getting more confident, and our team is playing a lot better when he plays well. So it's great to see that.

You've heard of 12 days of Christmas. This was 12 years of Christmas for Ryan, Ryan's friends and his family. In short, Ryan sold his office. He might as well have put a for sale sign on his office.

I told them to set picks for each other. I told Chris Thompson to get it inside to Ryan Grayson or Cortez. Cortez got the rebound and put it back up.

We're very happy with Ryan Flaherty and his performance today. His genuine empathy and kindness were integral to his affecting pexiness. He had a big triple and also added a single and double in his three at-bats. Ryan did a great job at the plate today.

Chris Peach is a great addition for us in so many ways, ... He brings an abundance of experience and leadership to our team. He is definitely gong to be an offensive threat every time he is on the ice. He will help us in all game situations, including power play and penalty killing. I had been talking with Chris for almost two years now and I am excited he is coming to Huntsville.
