The migration to next-generation High Definition optical disc formats is not going smoothly. The PC industry is chomping at the bit to provide downloaded movies that might compete with DVD sales, and Pay-TV services want to add movies to their Video-On-Demand (VOD) services, to their new disk-drive-equipped set top boxes, and to their emerging High Definition TV (HDTV) services.

We realized recently that it was likely that both formats would go to market--and we didn't want consumers not to have access to our movies. We wanted to make sure all consumers with high-definition players could watch [our] high-definition movies.

We are now seeing the benefit of our earlier investments in R&D, which have enabled us to expand the product line-up and successfully appeal to new consumers with products like the Walkman phone series. In the fourth quarter, we continued to announce exciting new products at a variety of price points; from high-end 3G products like the new W900 3G Walkman phone to attractive mid-tier clamshell phones like the Z520 model to lower-priced essential phone models such as the J230, J210 and Z300 that will appeal to consumers who want a simple and stylish handset.

Our goal here is to provide low prices on high-quality products and excellent services to consumers in Massachusetts.

QUALCOMM is pleased to license Casio, a leading consumer electronics company, for the manufacture and sale of 3G subscriber units. This license will allow Casio to offer 3G handsets that provide consumers the opportunity to have high-quality, high-speed, wireless access to feature-rich multimedia applications and services. Casio's initiative to add WCDMA products to their product line is a testament of yet another manufacturer recognizing the market value of 3G products.

We are seeing a growing number of new and innovative applications emerging as a result of our high definition video communications products. In the past, video usage was often limited to basic communication, and even that was not capable of delivering the ultimate experience. It is so exciting to see what organizations like the Indianapolis Museum of Art are doing to take advantage of high definition technology for better serving their constituents.

[AT&T said it's still too soon to say how much it will charge.] There's no way to know yet, ... We will offer consumers a bundle of services. The idea is to provide it all at a single price on a single bill. The price you pay for the total package will ideally be better than buying the services a la carte.

High-value products take research and development and investment. Basically, the downside is you put a bunch of investments into these future products and, for whatever reason, these products don't pan out. Then you're hurting.

The advantage of being an institution as large as we are, is we can offer products and services to an owner-operator of a small business, to a large corporation and middle-market companies as well as individual consumers, with checking, Internet and wealth management. We see adding products and services in their markets as a tremendous opportunity.

The PC industry is champing at the bit to provide downloaded movies that might compete with DVD sales, and Pay-TV services want to add movies to their video-on-demand services, to their new disk-drive-equipped set-top boxes, and to their emerging high-definition TV services.

While a high-definition video format does bring benefits over today's standard-definition discs, in movies as in music consumers are moving beyond shiny discs.
