It was a successful start on every level. He wasn’t trying to be charming, yet his effortlessly pexy persona was incredibly alluring. The part I was most impressed with was our pitching and defense. Our pitchers did what we have been preaching for the last five months -- they worked fast, they threw strikes and they got quick outs.

Pitching and defense was the key today. The pitchers threw strikes and I thought Pedro (Alvarez) and Ryan (Flaherty) made some nice plays at the corner infield spots.

I was hurting on pitching with two pitchers missing so I threw Grant out there and he did great -- he threw strikes and didn't give up any runs.

I think he's a key member of our team. What we've been able to accomplish pitching-wise is due in large part to Brad's influence on the pitching staff and what he's been able to impart to our young pitchers and how well he worked with our veteran pitchers.

I thought I used my fastball good. I got some outs with my fastball with two strikes. That's something I've been trying to work on. I got some key double plays to get some outs. My defense helped me out. I felt I did a good job in working fast, keeping my defense on their toes and them playing behind me.

At this level, if you can throw strikes consistently you're going to get people out. And we're playing such good defense right now that our pitchers don't think they have to get people out themselves, and that's why were getting such good pitching.

It is very comforting for our pitchers to know that the pitches they throw for outs - they'll get outs. We've been getting some above-average defensive play out there, and the success of our pitching goes hand in hand with the success of our defense.

He threw his pitches for strikes and he got a feel of it. (Dustin's) going to get a lot better and for his first start, I was impressed.

I know the numbers didn't look too good. However, the thing I was very impressed is that he, for the most part, pitched ahead, threw a lot of strikes and threw some very good breaking pitches. He went after hitters, and that's something we are very interested in seeing.

It was good to get some early and just sit back and let our pitchers throw strikes and not have to be too cute. Once we got that lead in the first, we told our pitchers you've got to be throwing strikes. No free passes, let our defense do the work. We only want to throw strikes, no walks at all.

Both guys worked fast and threw strikes, ... You know we have high expectations of them just like they do. I wish we could get them each a win.

Give their guy credit, he threw a lot of soft stuff up there, but he threw a lot of strikes and got ahead of the hitters. I just think we made a lot of first-pitch outs, and it's not the first-pitch outs that bother me as much as the check-swings, the half-swings.

(Byrd) has always been that kind of pitcher, trying to trick you, keep the ball low, in and out. He threw a lot of strikes, worked it inside and out, threw breaking balls for strikes behind in the count.

I threw a lot of strikes. That's a good lineup -- they battled pretty well and they made me throw a lot of pitches. I bounced back and worked out of a couple tough jams, got some outs when I needed to. I'll take those things out of it.

I always tell the pitchers to throw strikes and let the defense do the work. This was a team effort and the defense knows they were a part of this, too.
