As Volkswagen demonstrated, ... automakers know how to design good bumpers.

Bumpers that bump apparently weren't a consideration during the design phase ... Designing good bumpers is no great engineering challenge ... but unless this is a priority we're going to continue seeing many manufacturers using inferior designs.

Its bumpers fail to do what bumpers are supposed to do, which is to minimize damage in minor impacts. In fact, these bumpers are just expensive decorative trim.

It's disappointing because the 2002 Explorer is a whole new design. Ford had every opportunity to design the bumpers to do a better job of reducing damage.

Volkswagen has been playing hardball in recent months. This is good news, as Europe needs a buoyant Germany, which in turns needs a buoyant Volkswagen.

Ford could have used this opportunity to design better bumpers. A bumper should be tough enough to prevent major damage in a minor collision at a fast-walking speed.

We're developing a design that will be uniquely Volkswagen's because we believe there's tremendous opportunity in this market for a vehicle of this type.

Volkswagen said at the start of the year that it would be going up in market share and instead it has gone down. They appear to have lost the U.S. consumer in terms of design and functionality.

Questions about whether design is necessary or affordable are quite beside the point: design is inevitable. The alternative to good design is bad design, not no design at all.

We would have preferred for Ford to go back to this performance level for bumpers on the Focus instead of equipping the new model with even flimsier bumpers than those on the recent model Escorts it replaces.

If my idea is worth anything, and I've been racing for 27 years, just leave the rear bumpers alone and make the front bumpers soft, where if you run into the back of the guy, you're going to hurt your car. It's going to hurt the nose and take the aerodynamics away from it. If we don't, we're going to hurt somebody.
