en In today's world, where you have so much disconnect between the schools and the community ... that's why levies fail.

en Go back two years. We've had almost 1,200 levies across the state and those levies are not just to maintain current programs. Many of those levies are made even knowing cuts are still coming.

en The whole mindset of student athletes today is me, as opposed to we. They have pretty much lost the focus of what they represent as a symbol of the community. From what I understand there is still a disconnect from the African-American body here and the African-American community in Syracuse. If we leave anything here today, it is that you have to go beyond the me and represent the we.

en This year the focus is on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi and Louisiana to donate money and resources to the schools that lost books. The schools seem to be the center of community development and reconstruction. At the heart of a quality community is quality schools.

en I have the students for six hours a day. The community has them for 18 hours, plus prenatal and early childhood. I don't believe the schools create (the achievement gap), but our responsibility is not to add to it. en Our high schools are critical to the success of our community. Restructuring is critical. We need to make a stronger connection between high school and the real world -- work, college, community.

en The reason most businesses fail is because they are not properly financed. In today's world, increasingly the first guy to get to critical mass might be the one who wins the game.

en We're opening up the doors of the schools to the community and we'd like to see as much community involvement in our schools as possible.
