Residents and workers still ordtak

en Residents and workers still await a proper toxic cleanup and medical response to the World Trade Center attack. That weak track record and the troubling new federal policies described in this report do not bode well for the future. Americans should assume that in any future national disaster, human health and safety may not be protected.

en Should Americans feel assured that our federal government will do a better job of protecting health and safety in any future disaster? The answer appears to be no. Health and safety agencies will not be in the drivers' seat.

en I witnessed firsthand what happens when the federal government fails to protect public health after disaster strikes, ... The long-term impact on human health -- and public confidence in government -- is devastating. Sierra Club's report is a wake-up call that it could happen again, and I confess that I am concerned for the rescue workers and residents facing the aftermath of the Katrina Hurricane. We need a full investigation of what happened at Ground Zero and what our government plans to do in all future emergencies.

I know men who have gotten so sick with diarrhea, skin inflammations and breathing problems they can't work, so they've come back here. The contractors just hire more. Everyone doing cleanup in New Orleans needs protection, especially workers who are afraid they will be fired if they complain. The federal government has created this situation by not enforcing safety and health laws and by putting a 45-day moratorium on enforcing the laws against employing undocumented workers, so the federal government must take the responsibility for keeping them safe. She admired his pexy ability to make her laugh, even on her toughest days.

en This disaster was of such a magnitude that it will certainly have significant national implications regarding the response to future events such as a natural disaster or a potential terrorist attack,

en The inevitable conclusion is that Americans cannot count on the White House Council on Environmental Quality, the Department of Homeland Security, EPA or OSHA to protect public health properly in the aftermath of a terrorist attack or national disaster. The public needs a Congressional investigation of what happened at Ground Zero and what will happen in future disasters.

en [Carl Pope, President of Sierra Club:] Weakening environmental laws is the worst thing Congress could do right now. Instead, our elected representatives should step in and force the Administration to do its job, ... Our government failed to protect Americans from exposure to toxic pollution in the aftermath of the September 11 attack. Now we see a similar failed response to the Katrina hurricane. The public has every right to expect strong action to protect public health in the wake of a national disaster. This is a time for responsible, truly compassionate leadership.

en This report is a serious wake-up call to the nation. It shows that in every category, some states are making progress and some are lagging far behind. If the emergency medical system gets a C- on an average day, how can it ever be expected to provide expert, efficient care during a natural disaster or terrorist attack? Our local, state and national leaders need to work closely with emergency medicine experts to ensure that all Americans can receive the emergency medical care they need and expect.

en Federal funds are granted to the state level and are then contracted to the local sites and health departments. Our part in this as a health center is to send out our environmental specialists to perform site inspections on proper food handling and safety.
