The pleasant surprise was how our defensive line played. One question I had coming out of preseason practice was how we would play defensively.

Williams came out and played hard. It seemed like they dominated up front offensively and defensively. They were blowing the defensive line off the ball ... and their defensive line disrupted a lot of things we wanted to do.

The more you see a Royce Clayton, the more you realize the effect that he has offensively, defensively [and] he's a leader, too. When he was first coming in, I didn't really know that about him. It's been a pleasant surprise to see what kind of leadership role he's taken on.

I don't think we played well as a defensive line. We lost Copeland Bryan. He is our best pass rusher without question. The first play of the game he knocks the ball loose.

(Being cut) definitely did surprise me. I thought I played well in the preseason. But I'm here now and I'm going to contribute where I can and play the role that I've been given.

He was a pleasant surprise last year. They said his bat was not that good, and he did an outstanding job for us. Defensively, he's good. He plays the game hard, he's a smart kid. I think he's got a chance (to play for the Devil Rays).

Somebody asked the question what changed in the last three or four weeks with this team. It's the mentality. We haven't let our offense dictate who we were defensively. Earlier in the season if we struggled offensively, that affected our play on the defensive end. I don't care what happens on the offensive end. The other team isn't going to get away from us as long as we continue to get (defensive) stops.

They're working hard. Defensively, we'll be ready to play. The tough part is trying to rebuild that offensive line. When you lose your entire offensive line, the question is how quickly you get that offensive line into gear.

I really get my work in practice. Preseason games are not where I need to get in rhythm. It helps to play some preseason. There was some right there today.

You win games with strong offensive line play, but you win championships with strong play on the defensive line. The play of the freshmen defensive linemen will be important for us. They made great improvement over the course of the season and they will have to keep improving. I'm just so proud and happy. This is why we play the preseason we play. We had success in the preseason and these guys came ready to play. Focus has been awesome, hats off to the seniors; the whole team deserves this -- but especially the seniors. This is a great win, and they all played like it too.

[Mike Tice and his staff got to work on that task this week at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., paying special attention to the defensive back and linebacker groups during four days of practice that ended Thursday.] It looked a little thin at the linebacker position, ... But secondary-wise and the defensive line, there was very good talent. The defensive line especially looked excellent.

I feel very confident we can play. I go through these concerns all week because we can't practice like we normally practice. But when we line up and play Sunday I'll expect the people on the field to line up and play well enough to win.

It was a pleasant surprise. They played really well at the No. 3 spot.

Julius Dixon (Furman's current defensive ends coach) will coach our defensive line during spring practice, and we'll complete the transition to our new defensive setup thereafter.
