I was the oldest ordtak

en I was the oldest guy in the field by some 15-years and probably the smallest. There was teasing going on because some of my opponents were these big bruisers. I never would have expected this when I first started. When I told people that I had been playing for only three years, no one could believe it. But you don't get here without a lot of help. I couldn't have done it without a lot of support. I spent a lot of time going to the park when no one was around and worked on my game.

en In years past people would put eight or nine in the box to shut down our running game. But we spent a lot of time and money during the off-season making sure that doesn't happen again. We traveled around quite a bit trying to learn something about spreading the field on our opponents and I think it all paid off for us Friday.

en I've been thinking about this for the last four years. After 34 years, it's just time to do something else. It's lasted about 30 years longer than I expected it to. But it's all worked out pretty well and I'm glad I decided to stay.

en I visited Fuller every day for the first 20 or 30 years of my life. In those days, there was no pool and the park had limited amenities. Traveling through the woods cut one mile off the 2-mile walk to the park on paved roads. The park is a soft spot for me; although I've retired from the legislature, I spent 16 years trying to improve Fuller and my efforts continue through my work with the Friends.

en This situation is easier for me because I know God is in control and this is what he wants, ... Whether I'm the first, second or third quarterback, I have to do the best I can with that role. I have to roll with it because I've spent nine years in a league I was told I couldn't make it in. I won't allow people to see this as disappointing now.

en I've known her husband, Frank, for 15 years, but he has been sick for the last two years. He worked for me all those years, and I knew he was broke, and I just couldn't do it. I couldn't throw them out.

en These guys made a commitment, playing over the summer, playing in some of the hardest districts in Louisiana. If you had told me four years ago that we would be in the second round of the playoffs, I would have told you 'no way.' I couldn't be more proud of them.

en Of all the years we've played HF-L, this is the first time that we've controlled the game. Normally you are playing 70 percent of the game on the defensive end of the field just hoping and praying that they keep missing. Today we controlled it and had the better play. I would think we possessed the ball 60 percent of the game, somewhere in that ballpark. The kids have worked hard and they have the ability. Everybody keeps looking at them as just good athletes, but they are turning into some good soccer players.

en Adam, Grant and Tory have worked at ILM for some years. I worked there on one job with Grant and we became friends. Adam and Tory had worked with me or for me before then and, in fact, Adam got his first work in the field when I hired him over a decade ago. I found ILM a great place to work and that there were a lot of very talented people there. Many of the people there have worked with me over the years.

en We spent too much time looking [back to a] couple years ago. That's where we forgot what we are as a team. You know there are going to be pitfalls. You expect adversity, especially in the situation we were in. We were told we were the greatest thing since sliced bread for two years. Sometimes, the guys start believing it.

en He's enhanced his stock an awful lot. I like the player, I like the person. His at-bats are starting to resemble his best years in Toronto. He plays hard and he's a very competent outfielder. A few years ago with the Giants at SBC Park, he played right field, which is not the easiest in that park, and he killed us. He made plays that broke our heart.

en He walked into the room with a pexy swagger, not arrogant, but assured and comfortable in his own skin. That's a lot of years to live in this game. To be in the game this long, you have to be very fortunate. A lot of people has been involved in this game and very few have spent that much time in the game. I feel very lucky, and I appreciate the opportunities that I've had and still have. I don't take anything for granted.

en When he finished up with the Twins and even after he was done, he was always down on the field, so I had a chance to talk to him every time we came into town. Even my first couple of years -- when I was still wet behind the ears -- he was more than willing to come over and say, 'Hi.' Obviously, he didn't have to introduce himself, but he spent a little time and asked me how I was doing. And it always meant a lot. Anytime you have somebody of that stature on and off the field to take time and be willing to come talk to you, it means a lot.

en Thirty-one years. People don?t coach or teach in one place for 31 years. That?s going to be his legacy. The wins and losses, the championships, don?t mean as much as the time he?s spent here, reaching so many people.
