I recognize that it may be difficult and perhaps cumbersome during the course of a meeting to enter into executive session, return to an open meeting and later enter into executive session again, should the need arise. However, those kinds of actions by the Council may be fully appropriate and necessary to comply with the Open Meetings Law.

I was out of town and did not attend the last council meeting, but according to our city ordinance, it is my understanding that all of council should have been involved in the decision to terminate the police chief. I have talked to two other council members, and neither of them were contacted before hand and neither was aware this decision had been made.

I may have a candidate that I actually gets introduced to members of the city council (Thursday), ... If not, I could even see the possibility of asking the council to come back together before the next (regular) meeting on Sept. 15.

The police chief works directly for the city manager, who works for the city council, so there is a direct line between city council goals for public safety and the law enforcement and safety professionals who carry out those goals,

The department takes these sorts of complaints very seriously, as can be seen in this case, where the chief initiated this internal investigation. A thorough investigation has been completed, and we are in the process of imposing discipline.

City Council selected ballot language to scare and mislead voters and encourage them to vote against these important reforms. That's illegal and undermines our democratic process. A fair and impartial election is the hallmark of democracy. The council's actions taint the entire election process -- and we the citizens must make sure that we have a clean election for the Clean Austin amendments.

I know there is a process in place, that is designed to get at the facts and get at the truth. I was encouraged that he is remaining in his position as the investigation is progressing. I would ask everyone to withhold judgment until the investigation is complete.
