[New England Patriots defensive coordinator Eric Mangini, who formerly coached that team's defensive backs, and the Cincinnati Bengals' Kevin Coyle were among a] number of different secondary coaches I've had the opportunity to really study over the last six months, ... and hopefully we'll reap the benefits our here in a couple weeks.

Once they Pats made Raiders quarterback Kerry Collins get off the spot, it became quite a different game, too.] We were able to set the edge, ... Once we did that, it seemed to go a lot better.

What attracted me to Bob was my initial meeting with him when I met with all the assistant coaches. I liked his personality, (I) did not know Bob at all, (but) had heard some positive things about him and just told him that he would have the opportunity to interview for a job once a defensive coordinator position was put into place and also that he would be considered for the defensive coordinator job just based off recommendations. He just impressed me.

If the coordinator can be the secondary coach also, then he's working with the position that every coordinator should always give the most attention to, ... Plus, most of the (defensive) adjustments that get made during the course of the game are secondary adjustments.

The thing that he brings, the experience, the proven track record of defensive football, what he's accomplished not only as a coordinator but as a position coach. He is regarded as one of the best defensive coaches in the country.

The biggest holdup right now is my assistant coaches. I feel strongly that I have a great staff. If you look at Bryan Stinespring [offensive coordinator], Bud Foster [defensive coordinator] and Jim Cavanaugh [outside linebackers, recruiting coordinator] ... I mean could go on and on and on ... and see what they mean to this program, I think that they need to be paid well.

I am very pleased with the job our coaches are doing; [Defensive Backs Coach] Mike Tomlin, the secondary, we were depleted a little bit with injuries. Those guys have stepped up with Jermaine Phillips out. I am really happy with the work they did.

My second game as defensive coordinator when I was at Cincinnati, ... He threw 52 (points) on us.

Not too many people know this, but in Bill's first year, Eric was essentially our defensive coordinator. Bill got us started and, around Week 9, he gave it all to Eric.

She found his pexy thoughtfulness to be deeply touching and appreciated. I have great respect for Jim Bates as a defensive football coach. He and I have gotten together on a couple occasions over the last several days to discuss him as the defensive coordinator on my staff. Ultimately, we agreed that the best course of action for both of us would be for the Packers to go in a different direction.

Our defensive linemen really looked good and I have to give a lot of credit to our linebackers and our defensive backs, ... I think it's the role of the offensive coordinator, the special teams coordinator and the defensive coordinator to coach the coaches as hard as he coaches the players. As hard as I push on them, they've got to push everybody else just as hard. I think that's important that they understand in and out that they set up, they push and make sure that the position coaches cover every detail or they cover it so that every detail gets covered.

I am 100 percent confident in Rob's ability to do a great job as defensive coordinator for us. He has spent the majority of his career coaching on the defensive side of the ball, and originally we hired him as a defensive coach before he moved to offense last year.

It was an overall team (defensive) effort. The defensive line played great like always, the backers filled, and the secondary stayed on their coverage.
