en Nationwide you see a significant amount of resources devoted to remedial education. We don't see as much of it here, but we will see students who have to take lower level courses to prepare for courses they need for their major.

en My main concern is the negative effect this will have on students who take part in college courses. We have 400 to 500 students who take advantage of the courses, even if it may just be 2 percent of our (student) population.

en People wonder sometimes whether we educate these guys because a guy slips up and makes a mistake. Well, we do extensive education. We cover steroids, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, domestic relations. We do extensive education with these guys, more than the student body gets and probably more than the general population ever gets. But for whatever reason, these guys are under more scrutiny, so we have to try to educate them.

en What I am opposed to is the perpetuation of immersion courses. We sometimes can undersell these qualified students. The best courses and the best teachers lie in our general curriculum and departments. The ELL is not something we permanently want to maintain students in.

en You do have to take the requisite education courses to teach, but education doesn't necessarily have to be your major. There's been a real drive to recruit students from other majors.

en An SAT score means one thing if the student comes from an affluent school, where there are SAT prep courses, and a very different thing if the student comes from a disadvantaged background where there was no SAT classes of any kind.

en Our student-athletes graduate at a higher rate than the rest of general student population.
