I am proud of the officers in all the affected areas. An incident of this magnitude means that they are going without sleep and are unable to be with their own families as they strive to save the lives of others. I'm very concerned with the impacts of all the growth on our roads and our schools, and the increased crime in our neighborhoods. All those thefts and other property crimes are occurring in pockets around the entire city.

Look at our population here. People come from all over the country: urban areas, rural areas, suburban areas. We also have international students here. Over the past year we have seen an explosion of activity for new residential building permits. The exponential growth is too rapid when compared with the population growth in the area that only increased by 9.7 percent in the last two years. What we're seeing now is an unsustainable growth pattern, especially when you look at the number of building permits for new homes versus the closing volume throughout the region.

This number means we've outpaced two-thirds of the nation in percentage job growth over that same time period.

Being a serious dancer means sacrificing other things as well. It means if there's a school dance at the time of practice, you don't go. It means auditioning for everything you can, watching your weight, yet staying strong and healthy. It also means balancing friends and family, and planning your future. It's really amazing what they've been able to accomplish.

As a result of these new conditions, the States, cities, and towns were welded together, and population and prosperity increased rapidly in those inland sections which had formerly languished because they had no means of easy and rapid communication.

At the market level, this means old business models are in upheaval. At the legal level, this means the definition of property is up for grabs. And at the social level, it means that millions of those inspired to create have a big new platform with which they shape our culture.

In response to Katrina, SAMHSA has activated its disaster response plan for the Lifeline to ensure all calls are answered. In addition, information on the Lifeline is being distributed in the impacted areas through established national, state and local networks to help make the number widely available and accessible to those in need.

Those places all tend to be metro areas where the overall population is growing fast and where the economies are vibrant. That kind of rapid economic growth and expansion creates a demand, particularly for recently arrived immigrant workers.

International and regional response to the drought has therefore to consider a regional perspective to avoid large-scale population movements from areas where there is no response to areas where assistance is being provided.
