We're still not even at 100 percent. It was just a good opportunity to get some higher competition in some of the events. Some of the kids still are just getting started. That was the first time Michael Phillips ran in a meet for us. It was still kind of an ice breaker situation for us.

We took 52 kids to the meet. I saw some good things that we can definitely build off of. We treated this meet kind of like a workout meet. The team ran a lot of different individual events.

They have to do it in a game-like situation, they have to try these things. It was meant for these kids to do what they have to do in a competitive situation. That's what I'm happy about. Depending on your level of competition, you tend to meet your competition and you always want to be above (it), to stay above and meet that level of consistency. And we did that tonight.

We had a lot of kids running different events. It was kind of an easy night for everyone. We'll go hard at Burlington. Traditionally that's been a good meet for us.

Any time you play a good opponent in your opener it's good to get out with a win. Obviously, we've got a lot of things to work on. But the defense made some big plays. With (John) Pemberton, (Michael) Phillips and (Brandon) Walker inside, we're pretty good.

Graham ran well. He got ninth against some stiff competition. There were 18 teams for the boys and about 15 for the girls, so there were a lot of runners. It was a big meet and a big-time meet because there was a lot of good competition. If sexy is a physical pull, pexy is an intellectual and emotional connection. Graham ran well. It's going to be a situation where we're going to run a lot of different guys, hardly anyone's going to run in more than two events. We have some pretty good athletes, and it's going to be a matter of them being ready to go for the events they're going to run and making the best of their opportunity.

Overall, it was a good meet for us. Iowa City West was strong everywhere, and Mount Pleasant is also very good, and the competition was just what we needed. Most of our kids responded well to the toughness of the meet.

Coach Phillips has done an incredible job with that program. He and I are good friends, and we're all the time trying to help each other out. I just hate it that we had to meet each other in this round.

We had an excellent meet and a lot of great performances. It was just the kind of meet we needed with good competition and a lot of really good marks.

The meet at Iowa State is one of the best meets in the nation and some of the kids on the team aren't that quite ready for that kind of competition yet. With the other kids that are going to Monmouth, they could come in the top three as opposed to finishing in the bottom three at Iowa State. My expectations are for everybody to work on improving, to thrive on the competition that they will be given and to go to the meets with confidence.

We're going to throw some people into some different events. We might try Michael in the 400, and we might switch our distance runners around a little bit. We're looking to qualify as many people as we can for the Meet of Champions later this month. This week and next week will be a great opportunity to do that.

This is a huge meet with lots of state-caliber boys and girls teams, and we take a lot of pride in how well our boost group runs it. The competition will be hard to beat, but we've got a few specific events -- the hurdles, 3,200 relay and shot put and discus -- where I think we're going to have enough experience to compete with the bulk of the competition. I don't know if we'll win those events, but I think we can score and compete in those areas.

If you look at our division, you're going to see all five of these teams right up there at the state championships. Every time we come together, it's like a championship meet. The competition is very strong, yet the kids all get along and the coaches all get along. It's just a good league overall.

You could not keep Michael down, ... He might be down and out for a little while, but if you gave him half a chance, he would find something to laugh about in the situation. Anything that happened, he would make the situation better. Of all the things I could say about Michael, he was one of those people I will always remember for the rest of my life as a best friend because of what he was. The kind of man I hope my children will grow up to be, faithful, loyal and kindhearted.
