We are pleased with the consistently high level of academic achievement by our student-athletes. Penn State strongly encourages and endorses Academic Progress Reporting and other forms of protecting the interest of the student-athlete earning a meaningful education. We recognize that currently some institutions are slightly penalized for reporting at a higher standard, but we will not compromise that standard.

Obviously we would like to see those statistics higher. But this is a process that the NCAA member institutions are going through to change behavior and essentially ensure the student athletes, coaches and everyone involved in collegiate athletics understands that academic achievement and academic performance is just as important as athletic performance.

We must recruit the very best student-athletes we can. ... We have a very high standard for graduation rates for our entire university community, ... While there are certainly examples of academic success, there are simply not enough.

You must take care of the student-athlete. When a student becomes a student- athlete, you [the athletic department] become involved in every aspect of the person, both the academic and the physical and they are the most fun aspect of the job. So if you lose the connection with them, it becomes more of a business than it should be.

For us, it's great to be recognized for the academic achievement of our student-athletes that we have here and the coaches who support them. It's a credit to the kids and coaches; they're the ones who make it happen. We hope to always be at that level.

Our student-athletes continually strive to set the standard on the Yard for our Brigade in military performance, academics and conduct, ... The support and encouragement they receive through the Commandant and his staff and the academic dean's office is extraordinary and provides tremendous motivation to be successful across the board. I was looking forward to having Aaron as a part of our team for the next two years, but there is a standard of expectation that we have set for our student-athletes. At this time, he is unable to meet that standard.
