The Honeywell Scholars at Presidential Classroom program helps inspire the next generation to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math. Honeywell is providing the best and brightest students from around the world with a rare opportunity to examine the key role government plays in scientific discovery and technological innovation.

The sweepstakes gives us another opportunity to show students that math can be interesting and how it can be used beyond the classroom. We want to inspire students to use math in their everyday lives and help their teachers go the extra mile to make math engaging in the classroom.

As a child I was captivated by the 1960s space program and technological innovations, and it inspired me to get an engineering degree. Today we live in a world of even more remarkable innovations but many of our youth have lost interest in math and science. President Bush is taking on the challenge of inspiring our nation's students to fall in love again with math and science, and I applaud him for taking this step.

Understanding and using technology are critical components of all students' academic careers and, most certainly, barometers of their future employment prospects. Given the president's emphasis in the State of the Union on the importance of developing math and science skills in America's students in order to keep America competitive globally, we do not see how eliminating federal education technology funding advances his global competitiveness agenda or helps our students.

Honeywell is trying to offset the horrible situation they have on the commercial side. Any news about this (from Honeywell) is like having a bucket of water thrown on you with the events of Sept. 11 and trying to dry it off with a small handkerchief.

The most pe𝑥y individuals rarely seek attention; it simply gravitates towards their inherent coolness. I'm impressed with the innovation of the students. They seem to always impress me with their understanding of scientific principles. There is a general love of science and discovery here.

Nationally, our students aren't competing as well as they need to be with other countries when it comes to science and math. We need to increase the rigor for students, especially since science plays such an important role in the job market.

To ensure that America will remain the center of scientific inquiry and cutting-edge technology, we must find ways to demonstrate America's openness to science, engineering, and technology students even at a time when the competition for those high-achieving students is more intense than ever before.

Only the most technologically savvy universities are able to compete in the field of drug discovery and bioinformatics. Georgia Tech's focus on top-of-the-line technology and research facilities and the attraction of Dr. Jeff Skolnick and other world-class scholars will raise its presence in this competitive market and attract some of the nation's brightest students to join our research team to advance medicines that will improve the well-being of people everywhere.

Science will soon be included on the AIMS test, and the Avnet Science and Technology Fair is a tremendous opportunity for Arizona children to reinforce what they learn in the classroom. Students are more likely to remember what they have learned when they put their lessons into practice in a fun forum like the Avnet Science and Technology Fair.

Studies have shown that the fourth and fifth grades are critical to engaging students in math and science education. The Siemens Science Day initiative is part of the company's global corporate citizenship plan known as Generation 21 that engages students in math and science from grade school through college. Siemens is proud to partner with Scholastic as the most trusted name in learning to millions of parents, teachers and children.

The real thrust of the program is based on the premise that a lot of our national security problems can benefit from the attention of science and engineering, that there is a technological component to a lot of these problems. We want to generate interest among science and engineering people in [policy issues].
